Great starter amp!
I knew nothing about amps prior to this purchase, but I spent literally days reading all I could find. While I viewed dozens of sites overall, take a look at the buying guide at sweetwater if you too are a newbie and want a good, but succinct, overview of the basics. After I understood the various options I read hundreds of reviews (I am a just a little bit on the obsessive, compulsive side if you haven't gathered that yet). The amp was a Christmas present for my son who also received a MIM Strat (that was a month-long research effort!). And yes, he is an extremely spoiled (but deserving) kid. But I didn't want to spend too much as he is a beginner, and I wasn't 100% certain he would stick with his playing. And as he goes away to college next year, portability was a definite factor. Based on all that and the great reviews I read, I decided to go with this model. After more than two months my son is still extremely happy with it. It sounds great, has just enough good effects to mess around with, it can go PLENTY loud, and the ability to carry it up and down the stairs, to his lessons, etc is great. The batteries seemingly last forever and for a pretty small outlay, I think it possible that he doesn't buy another amp for many years.

Great little practice amp
I don't usually write reviews unless I am pretty impressed with a product. This amp is great. It is small and has a really great sound. It is great for a portable practice session anywhere. Pretty loud for 5 watts. Not enough to jam with drums of course. I bought one so I don't have to power up my Mesa. I would compare the rectifier setting on this amp to Pantera distortion. The clean tone sounds great for solid state. I even plug my electric acoustic into it for some extra volume. It has a lot of effects like delay, flange, reverb etc. You can choose one effect at a time and use them with clean or distortion. The battery option is great so you could take it to the beach. Buy one, you won't be disappointed.

Awesome for beginners and practicing
I've had mine for about a year now. I bought it when I decided to teach myself guitar without breaking the bank. As I was living in an apartment with study-conscious roommates I wanted something that was easily packed up for moving, taking over to a friend's place, or praticing quietly. After watching some YouTube videos that demonstrated its sound and distortion functions (probably biased) I decided it was a low-risk investment. I have to say that I was an absolute beginner to guitar, but not to music. My previous instruments were all brass and some piano. I lack the trained guitarist's ears to discern great amp sound from poor sound, so I can't make any educated analysis on the "warmth" or "solidity" of the sound. It could be the pickups on my guitar, my poor choice in wiring, etc. But again, for these reasons I had little to gain by buying an expensive amp for teaching myself. I've never used the amp on battery power. I always have it plugged in with the included adapter. I also rarely play it without headphones on. I also use it for both electric guitar and electric bass. All of the included effects such as flanger, reverb, etc. I don't ever really use unless I'm playing around, or want to hear a riff I just learned with amusing effects. They all seem to work just as well as effects pedals, but again I'm not a professional. The dial that's used for the different distortion levels (Black Panel, Classic, Brit Combo, etc.) I use all the time. If I'm working on, say, some Ozzie riffs I have it on the R-FIER for some legitimate-sounding metal guitar, no hassle. If I'm on my bass I usually set it to BLACK PANEL or JC CLEAN that sounds great for Red Hot Chili Peppers songs. A lot of the more expensive apps don't come with these effects (they are not "combo" amps) and require extra pedals, heads, etc. It really is nice having them on such a compact, inexpensive amp. Granted, the naming conventions for the distortion levels don't make sense to me (what IS jc clean?) and I had to look in the instruction manual the first day to figure out which one I needed for metal. The reason I knocked off a star is that if you are playing without headphones the speaker can sound a little bad if turned up too high. It's like how car speakers sound scratchy when the volume is up on the sub-par stock system. But I don't play in a band, and I bought it for solo practice with headphones so neighbors/roommates aren't disturbed. Since I never "rock out" on this little amp I have no problems. If you are a beginner like me, you have nothing to gain by buying anything more expensive. This one is small, lightweight, and will let you experiement with lots of different sounds without additional equipment. It sounds GREAT through headphones. One thing you might need is a seperate tuner. It has a chime thing set for A 440Hz, but you have to bash the little button to make it sound for a couple seconds. Not really enough time to bring your hands back to the strings to pluck/strum. I got a cheap electric tuner from a music shop that you could plug directly into the cord from your guitar. I think it's Seinen? It also tunes for bass and acoustic. PROS: small. inexpensive. lots of effects included to experiment with. good sound through headphones. awesome for beginners like me, bass or guitar. you can play all sorts of music through it. CONS: don't expect to jam with friends or rock out with it. it plays fine through the speaker, just not at higher volumes.

Greatest Little "Big" Amp
I purchased this amp while looking for a small "beat around" practice amp and the portability caught my attention (it also runs on 6 AA batteries, which gives you about 5 - 6 hours of use on batteries (depending on how it's used of course, which is pretty damn amazing). I looked into some reviews and researched the product, but never actually heard it before I made the purchase, but I was aware of the Roland brand and their quality having played through their other "big" amps (Keyboard and guitar). It actually turned out to be one of the best purchases I've ever made. I can't speak for it's lifespan considering it's only been a month, but this little amp impressed and continues to impress me. It is much louder than I expected, considering it's rated output is only 2W RMS through a 5" speaker. With the built-in effects (chorus, phaser, flanger, delay) and different amp models ranging from "Acoustic clean" to "Ozzy overdrive". This amp is equivalent to the Marshall MG series and Fender Mustang series, but much smaller and portable. It also takes up much less space than it's competitors and I strongly recommend this product to anyone looking for a practice amp. An AC adapter is included, but batteries are not included, so I would suggest looking into a rechargeable AA (6pack) set for those who want to play outdoors often where no "juice" is available. I guarantee this amp will impress you.

Does sound pretty good overall, the 7 amp models work well, and it has reasonable volume. Not that happy with the effects however, as the four choices are controlled by one rotary control that doesn't provide much precision, and doesn't really allow you to turn effects completely off.
