It's a Tool Not The Gospel
This book came as a recommendation to me and I'm very happy 😊 I went along and bought the book. It covers different plants with some images, alternatives to herbs ie different names based on country and so forth. "New years" feasts, wall washes and many more. My thoughts outside of the book, I was overwhelmed with certain content that I felt heavy workings but once I sat with it, that feel eased up.

Wonderful book
Fantastic peek into a cultural treasure: hoodoo and rootwork, or African-American folk magic. Cat Yronwode is extremely well-versed in the tradition, and this book is a comprehensive review of the herb-based work done in hoodoo.

An interesting story about a collection of botanical herbs.
This book helps you to reconsider the herbs you may have in your home and how you could use them, to enhance aspects of your spiritual life as well as you're physical.

Great on Hoodoo but not on European magic
This book is great in terms of spells and recipes and information on practical hoodoo. The reason it lacks full stars is that the author (at the start) discusses the problems of European magic but clearly does not know much about it. Her knowledge seems to be restricted to forms of new age and practices that equally frustrate many western magical practitioners both occultists and witches, but is happy to neatly paint all European magical practitioners with the same brush. One example being the three-fold law which is only something taken on by some forms of wicca and new age practitioners; though to speak for all people within those fields would not be acceptable. Essentially the author is only addressing one group of practitioners but stating its for the entirety of European practitioners. The reason this was so frustrating is because that Europeans are often accused of not understanding Hoodoo and not doing their research properly etc and yet this is one of the problems with this book. Rising past this however this book is a remarkable resource on hoodoo practice. I read a review that didn't like that this book focused on practical spell work but this is the strength of the book: highly practical and easy to use.

Most thorough
This books is like an excellent dictionary. However it contains no lessons only spells that can be done to get certain results.

As a student and practitioner of Hoodoo (among variety of other spiritual and esoteric disciplines and traditions), as well as student of Catherine Yronwood, I do consider this book to be a great resource on herbal lore of the Hoodoo magical tradition. While this book does contain 750 traditional spells, tricks and magical recipes and information on 500 herbs, roots, minerals and zoological curios, and in that respect I consider it to be unique and invaluable, the book serve more appropriately those who are actually practicing Hoodoo, rather than to someone with no background experience who just picks up the book. In magic in general, experienced practitioners do tend to substitute ingredients and have their own favorite recipes that will vary from those that are mentioned in this book. Magic is ultimately about experiencing your own subjective experience of reality and what smells sexy or like money to one person may not smell sexy or like money to another, and experienced practitioner may tend to adjust the recipes so that they feel just right to them. In one tradition chamomile may be associated with calming things down - in Hoodoo, on the other hand, due to the golden color of flowers, it is associated with wealth. In Wicca, mugwort tends to be associated with prophetic dreaming and psychic vision, and if you are into aromatherapy, clary sage will bring out those vivid dreams, but in Hoodoo flax seeds are added for psychic vision. If you are working with different herbal traditions and you have a variety of recipes, your personal experience will tell you what works the best for you, in which case you may adapt the recipes to what is most effective for you, rather than to what you may have read in this or any other book. And yes, psalms are popular in Hoodoo, but if they are not your cup of tea, you can create your own chants and prayers, or simply speak from your heart. The purpose of any kind of magic to help you to bring to life the subjective experience of the goal you desire to manifest, rather than to go through motions that have no meaning for you. The source of any kind of magic is within your mind and within your heart.
