Pen and Ink Drawing Workbook: Volume 2

I kept looking at this workbook but felt it was a little over my budget however I bought it as a birthday gift and wow, it was a 6 week course of tips, practice and more practice. I did each activity, sometimes more than once and it took my artwork to a whole new level. I’m so glad I invested in me, if you have a little skill in drawing then you’d probably benefit, it might be tricky if you’ve never drawn before however don’t let that stop you. Don’t look at this as just a book. It really is a course in its own right & I teach! Invest in yourself, you won’t regret it! Have fun x Thank you Mr Dunn x

Fantastic complement to Alphonso’s first book, reinforcing and bringing live everything you have learned. One to revisit constantly. Shighky recommended.

I was interested in learning pen and ink drawings so I bought Alphonso’s ‘A simple guide’. It made me scratch my head a lot. This workbook bought all the ‘simple guide’ into understanding. I recommend if you’re buying the ‘ simple guide’ also purchase the workbook. It has shown me what is meant when it says to gradually develop shading from two or three values with a wider range what options are available. If you want to just build up your strokes through drills and exercises. This book guides you through over 100 drills and exercises

Drawing well with pen and ink is not easy, yet Alphonso Dunn makes it as approachable as I think anyone ever could. He breaks it down into steps so that you can master one part at a time. I was delighted with the progress I made following his way, only disappointment is that he doesn't seem to have any further books to take you further, but there's always his YouTube viedos which are awesome.

Exercises on pen control, the uses of shading, textures, values etc. There are around 20 drawing exercises at the which build on the techniques previously shown but this is not a book which shows you how to draw objects; it's more about how to add definition and texture using Pen and ink (although I use pencil too and the tips work just as well) For a beginner it is a useful workbook to learn and try out different techniques and for building up muscle memory. This is complementary to the main book "Pen & Ink Drawing: a simple guide", however I have only bought the workbook and have been able to use this as a stand alone. Four stars as perhaps a little expensive for a workbook but I have enjoyed Alphonso Dunn's You Tube demos so it's probably a fair price to pay.

Great exercises to get your hand drawing

Attention ce livre ne vous apprendra pas à « dessiner » en tant que tel, il vous apprendra la régularité du trait, ainsi que comment ombrer, simuler les textures, donner du volume aux objets. Je pensais que les exercices de ce livre seraient relaxants, récréatifs. Ils demandent au contraire une très grande concentration, beaucoup d’application et de rigueur. C’est un retour à l’école du dessin d’une façon très interactive et progressive, accessible à tous. Ce livre nous met réellement au travail, il nous fait progresser en nous demandant notre participation, et c’est en cela qu’il est irremplaçable. On pratique!!! On peut tout simplement en faire un peu chaque jour, même 30' nous permettent d’avancer sans s’en rendre compte. On peut le prendre à tous les niveaux, même débutant, mais celui qui a l’habitude de manipuler le crayon ou la plume y arrivera plus aisément. Les exercices apparaissent tout d’abord comme un entraînement un peu abstrait, des lignes de traits à reproduire dans un sens, dans l’autre, des courbes qui se répètent régulièrement, des traits simulant le volume, le sens, du remplissage... Ils prennent tous leur sens lorsqu’on les met en application en remplissant comme on l’a appris une forme géométrique de façon a lui donner un volume par exemple. Hé oui, bien dessiner au graphite ou à l’encre c’est d’abord beaucoup de travail, on s’en serait douté... Une chance: A. Dunn nous offre là encore un petit miracle de pédagogie. Ce gars est vraiment très très doué pour transmettre son art. Merci Alphonso!

nice thick book with plenty of exercises to complete. However it lost a star due to the pages being thin- if you use anything other than pencil it will show through. I will be scanning and printing

Até agora, atendeu totalmente as espectativas, muito bom utilizar o livro para praticar após ler o livro teórico. Após alguns exercícios já consigo perceber a melhoria na qualidade dos meus traços e ainda estou em cerca de 1/10 do material

This book is exactly what the title says it is -- a workbook for pen and ink. It's great. Every page features at least one new exercise with lots of space for practicing, and each exercise builds off of content introduced earlier in the book. Towards the end there are multiple drawing exercises, whereby you have to shade drawings using all the techniques provided in the lessons -- what's especially great about these more advanced shading lessons is there is a "tracing" exercise you can do before you attempt apply the actual shading to the a drawing by yourself -- this tracing exercise is a light grey version of Alphonso's shaded picture that you simply trace in order to get a better handle on the technique. For anyone who's a fan of Alphonso Dunn's extremely helpful and thoughtful YouTube videos, this workbook will not disappoint! I'd been meaning to get it for months and am so glad I finally did. Like his videos, this book stands apart from other instructional materials out there because it actually forces you to do the work, not just look at page after page of the artist's example drawings. I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to develop their pen and ink skills. Useful for beginners as well as more intermediate artists!
