EarthWay 2050P 80lb Broadcast Spreader, Lawn Aerator, Fertilizer Spreader, 80lb Capacity, Pre-Assembled, with Rustproof Poly Hopper and Adjustable Drop Rate for Lawn Care & Seed Spreading

I was using a drop spreader to fertilize my lawn prior to purchasing this spreader. I have 1-1/2 acres and use about 1-3/4 bags (15,000 sf/bag). I decided to research a broadcast spreader and found positive reviews about this EarthWay 2050P. I wanted one which would hold a 40lb bag without feeling overloaded. My property also includes some small hills and uneven surfaces so the large inflatable wheels was appealing to me. I received the spreader this week, it arrived in its original box, and completely assembled. All I had to do was rotate the handle up and tighten. I used it today and covered my entire property very quickly. This is an obvious improvement over the drop spreader but I also found the Earthway to operate with ease, it spread consistently and worked flawlessly. The control mechanism seems well built and the padded handle is a nice feature. When the shut-off lever is moved to the off position, it is a positive "Off" with no fertilizer leaking out. The entire spreader seems to be well built. I will now fertilize my property four (4) times a year rather than 2. Great Product!

First off I should disclose that this is only my second spreader. The house we bought came with several items for yard care and one was a Scotts spreader. It turned out to be badly worn out and would barely push along. Upon inspection I could see the cheap little axle was to blame. The hopper had a poorly designed hole to drop product onto the spreader and the lever that opened/closed the hole was garbage. Cheap plastic tires too. I believe in buying something that's engineered to handle heavy loads and then not abusing it. So I researched and came up with the Earthway brand, and saw improvements in all the above areas with this model. Better drop system, better axle, wheels and designed for up to 80 lbs. I'm not disappointed! It's easy to use and floats over the grass. The hopper will handle very big loads as well and it only throws the product forward, not on your shoes. I did have some issue with wet sand, but anything wet will clump and be difficult to spread. Upon inspecting Earthway's line up, a cheaper model may have done the job for me as my yard isn't the biggest. Now that I know the quality of the spreader they make I would have considered this. Still, it's nice to know I've got an 80 lb designed spreader and wheels, axle etc. to handle whatever I throw at it.

Glides over the lawn without ripping it up (would be pointless for a spreader to destroy the lawn, but the plastic wheel ones have both on Scotts and no-name brand ones). Most spreaders choke on big bags of powder lime. This one was even and fast. I have not found anything within 100 dollars of this product that could compete with it. I put forth 1/20th the energy moving around the spreader. The pneumatic rubber wheels are the key along with a simple and sturdy design. The adjustment opens and closes with precision, it is made well. The picture makes it look cheesier than it is. It has a strong build to it and the handle can be loosened to fit in a tight shed. I was impressed by it in general :) The only possible issue is the cotters pin/wire that is in the bucket to mix the powder. I do not know how much of a load it can take. However, all spreaders have one as far as I have seen. Maybe on 400 dollar ones they use other things?

After one season of use the transmission got very stiff. It took more effort to push. I tried to remove the gearbox for service and found it was sealed. The protective cap on the pinion gear had what looked like dried red grease. So I took out the pinion gear and packed the gearbox with more grease. Now the unit runs smoothly again. Build quality is pretty good. Gears are made of plastic, but substantial. I like the beefy tires, it is easier to maneuver compared to the cheap all plastic tires. The broadcast settings work well. Sometimes you must calculate the proper setting, which isn't too difficult. The lever works well enough. Starts and stops easily. I hope it will last a while. It is difficult to find a decent spreader. This one is more heavy duty compared to the ones offered in home stores. Would buy again.

Mine lasted less than 2 years. I always cleaned the spreader down after use. The spreader adjustment cable corroded and broke off. I wasted a lot of money on this product; don’t do the same.

Got this spreader to do double duty as an ice melter applicator. So far, it has worked well. Its durable construction makes me think it will work fine for lawn fertilizer and last a long long time. Assembly was a breeze out of the box (two bolts to install handle) You can buy similar for less but never regret good quality at a fair price.
