Review: Everything you would like to know about The Greatest - There are good biographies. And there are great ones. Hauser's take on Ali definitely comes in the latter category. The book draws heavily on interviews with people who were close to Ali - his parents, his rivals, his coach, members of his retinue...and the result is a brilliant and perhaps the most comprehensive book about one of the greatest athletes of our time. And while the overall portrayal of the person is positive, it is by no means hagiographic (as we have seen of some sports biographies), with plenty of barbs finding their way through. The most stirring sections are those about Ali refusing to sign up for military service, his epic rivalry with Joe Frazier (the Thrilla in Manila is covered in amazing detail), and the latter part which covers his battle with his health problems. A lovely book. THIS is how biographies should be written - my only criticism is that Hauser lets others do the talking too often. It would have been nice to see his own opinion more often, but then that is something I said about Isaacson's book on Jobs too. In sum, nothing short of an awesome read. Even if you know nothing about Ali.
Review: A Special Insight Into Muhammad - This is a wonderful and in-depth look into Muhammad Ali's life as told by those closest to him. My only complaint is that the chapters ran a bit too long - not in content and not long as in boring or bad/useless information - not that at all. I'm a slow reader and it was simply time consuming to finish each chapter. The chapters are told to you by Ali's friends, family, contemporaries and the man himself. You really get a feeling for Muhammad - the person not just the boxer - through his family, friends and those that know him. I put the book down feeling closer to Muhammad Ali and feeling a warmth from him and a warmth towards those he loves and cares for... I walked away from this book with such great feelings for Muhammad Ali. I felt as if I'd laughed alongside with him - and that alone is worth reading this book
