A critical edition of one of the most influential literary documents in American and African American history โThis edition is the most valuable teaching tool on slavery and abolition available today. It is exceptional.โโNancy Hewitt, Distinguished Professor Emerita, Rutgers University Ideal for independent reading or for coursework in American and African American history, this revised edition of the memoir written by Frederick Douglass (1818โ1895) of his life as a slave in preโCivil War Maryland incorporates a wide range of supplemental materials to enhance studentsโ understanding of slavery, abolitionism, and the role of race in American society. Offering readers a new appreciation of Douglassโs world, it includes documents relating to the slave narrative genre and to the later career of an essential figure in the nineteenth-century abolition movement. Review: Emotional engagement - Outstanding memoir with vivid depictions of the day to day horrors and challenges of enslaved persons. Review: Accurate reading - Great read, very good for teaching.

Wonderful Piece of Historic Literature
Order this specific book for my English college class & it was an absolute amazing read as well as insightful. It is pure insanity to know that Oklahoma banned this book from being used in the classroom. It educates you on slavery from the perspective of Frederick Douglass, as well as giving other insight on the response to the publishing of said book. 10/10 amazing read.
