This alarm uses ionization sensing technology. Ionization sensing alarms may detect invisible fire particles (associated with flaming fires) sooner than photoelectric alarms. Photoelectric sensing alarms may detect visible particles (associated with smoldering fires) sooner than ionization alarms. Kidde strongly recommends that both ionization and photoelectric smoke alarms be installed to help insure maximum detection of the various types of fire that can occur within the home. Functionally the i4618 is equivalent to the 4618, but there are a few differences that affect the installation:- The wiring connector is incompatible with existing 4618 connector- The mounting bracket is incompatible with existing 4618 mounting bracket- The i4618 is a bright white color and the 4618 is more beige (though this could be due to a yellowing of plastic over the past decade)There is an adapter for the wiring connector which will set you back about $5, but that doesn't fix the mounting bracket issue which you'll need to replace anyways. Fortunately, the screws for the mounting bracket are in the same location for both i4618 and 4618 mounting brackets so it was an easy enough swap. I also opted to replace the wiring connector with the one provided for the i4618, which required me to switch off the power to the circuit. Overall, the job took me about 10-15min of installation time but I was expecting a drop-in replacement, which should have only taken about 1min.I removed two stars for the false labelling. I don't see why Kidde (the manufacturer) had to change the adapter and mounting bracket such that they are incompatible. Besides this, I've had the detector installed for only a week, so I cannot comment on battery life, but I will update my review later once I have more info. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Replacement for original detector, but description is wrong! *by J***L on Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2020* This was a direct replacement for my 15 year old Kidde smoke detector. The wiring harness is identical, so I had no wiring to do. This made installation a snap.But beware information is incorrect in the description;1) This is not battery powered.
