The wooden box is nice for display. I don't think the box would be sturdy enough to carry around in your pocket, but suitable to display it in on a shelf. I haven't tested it for accuracy, but for display or a gift I would purchase it again. Review: Not sure about the inconsistent experiences on here. Mine is just as described and very well crafted. There are some good videos explaining how it works, but basically, open it up, unlock the compass needle, turn it to face north, and the shadow lines up with the time on the outer edge. In one of my pictures you can see that it indicates the time is a little after noon, which is when I took the photo. I've found it to be accurate to about 10-15 minutes, which is fine for a sun-dial. I'm not looking for atomic clock level accuracy here, especially since it will largely be ornamental. Also, that lever that you lift up on the side (on the left in the picture where I am holding it) is a protractor and is used to adjust your latitude (Declination), so, for example, if your latitude is 40 degrees north, you set the protractor to 40. I haven't really needed it since i'm not going for pin-point accuracy, but it is interesting. The axis of the sundial points at the North Star. Note that Sundial time is not the same as standard time or daylight savings time for your location so it seems to be always wrong. The sundial twelve number should be shadowed by the gnommon at local solar noon - (when the sun is due South of your location)... Before railroads and standard time, everyone used local solar time - long days in summer , short ones in winter...
