Review: My beloved HD599 - This headphone has been with me since February 2019 (forgot myself to write a review but now is the time to give praise to this veteran can) as a daily "ish" (I now use more the HD650 in my desk but still use the HD599 for my phone DAC/AMP in my office or house desk), it has blown me away with the performance for a first experience into proper audio headphones (coming from gaming headphones) since day one without any gadget it has been great but when I got a budget amp (not the beefy one in the photo) it became more amazing and that was the nail to my sentence to the journey. now to the pros of this headphone; +it is warm in the sound signature compared to the HD650 of mine, it has that distinctive warm relax signature which makes it great to not cause any fatigue to hours of listening, for games this thing has given me an edge into locating sounds directions and distance +It is light weight, and the clamp is like a pillow soft but won't move away by itself but won't dig into your head but the headband might cause discomfort but mitigated by raising the arch a bit but not too much or moving the position of it. (Maybe the clamp force got softer after many years) + it is designed to last if treated right, I had to replace cable due to rubber degradation, after this many years it was expected for the cable rubber to start becoming sticky (not a negative point since its replaceable) earpads and headband are as well being replaced whenever degradation happen, but the headphone prevailed for years sounding great. one key thing I noticed when I had to replace the headband for the first time, I saw that the arch is not a single piece that gets stretched and fatigued like a solid piece but 2 pieces united in the middle by screws links acting as a joint allowing it to flex without causing stress into the arch in the middle when you open it to place it into the head, reason why it hasn't failed for years. +the nature of the open back is perfect for anyone that has to be available to hear queue sounds outside the listening sessions so you might not miss a call from a relative or the doorbell if you aren't blasting the sound volume. great awareness. +Due to be the most popular headphone for years you can find replacements for dirt cheap or if you want to be OEM spec you must be ready to pay the premium. Now the cons; - Due to be the nature of being open back it will leak sound like crazy, not a cons for me but it might be for someone who plans to use it outside the privacy of a room -the headband is fake leather so expect it to flake and make a mess in your head once it begins to peel, the replacement process is messy and scary (you have to cut the original one and rip it off and stick the new one which is not perfect look and the process a bit difficult to place it right, the one I use it stick with double side tapes and velcro but it gives life to an old can that has been faithful) -/+ you might not like the color scheme as a gamer/streamer/young lad but when you put it on, you will forget the color scheme and enjoy the warm sound it gives. - It might drag you into a rabbit hole you believed it won't happen to you, but it might... you have been warned. Review: Great starter for audiophile beginners. - I got these headphones as a upgrade to my Bose Soundtrues I got 3 plus years ago. I heard about Sennheiser open headphones being one of the audiophile standards when wanting great audio, and I read lots of reviews on different ones on RTings.com. So when I decided to venture into the so-called realm of audiophiles, I wanted to do so without breaking the bank. So I looked and looked until I came across these Sennheiser HD599s. These are an upgrade to the HD598, a very popular premium, entry level open back headphone. However, one of the complains about the 598s is that it lacks in bass, this upgrade is supposed to correct that. The design is very premium looking, and I like the color pattern. Many people claim they don't it and prefer the standard black look most headphones have, but I like the cream and silver look. It reminds me of luxury cars like an Audi or a Bentley. The pads are very comfortable and look like the kind of material used in car seats further giving that luxery look. The pads never get irritating after hours of use, nor does the ears get sweaty from the inside, which most plastic foam materials cause. the build is also very sturdy. You'd have to drop these from a decent height more than once to seriously damage them. So how do they sound? In one word, great. These headphones have a well balanced sound with just enough deep bass to standout without being overwhelming. The mid-range is nearly perfect, meaning vocals are not to high and intrusive and not too low where you can't hardly hear them over the music. The treble is excellent. Symbols and other high sounding instruments come through clear without sounding distorted and ear piercing. The sound stage, which open back headphones are best at, is very immersive adding body and fullness to the music. It's for this reason that these headphones are also great for watching movies and playing video games. So are there any cons? Yes, but only a few. One, the headphones do not come with a carrying case, like most headphones do once you start paying well over 100 dollars for them. Second, the headphones come with two cords, a small standard 3.5mm cord for cell phones and the like, and a long 10ft stereo cord. The stereo cord, however, is kind of flimsy and has a receiver style jack at the end. Luckily, there's an adapter included that can change it into another 3.5mm output. Final note: I didn't use any fancy headphone or stereo amps, because these headphones has an impedance of 50, so it doesn't take much to drive. My review is based on using this like any other average headphone in different applications like my PC and Television. Bottomline: These are great open headphones for the price, especially if you are just starting to get into this whole audiophile thing. I know I won't be going back after these babies. My next pair which likely won't be for a while, will be something ever more premium like a Sennheiser 600 series, or a HiFiman, Focal, etc. I checked in and I can't check out.

**Q: How do these compare to the 598s?**
A: The HD 599 is a cosmetic refresh of the the HD 598.  Both uses the Sennheiser SYS38 50-ohm transducer.

**Q: How is the bass on these headphones? Does it effect the mids/highs at all?**
A: While these aren't "bass head" headphones, they have noticeably more bass than their predecessor the HD 598s.  I always found the HD 598s to be a little "bass light", where the HD 599s have a much richer sound.  The HD 599's are more musical where the HD 598s are more analytical.  Depending on the track and your listening level there may be some noticeable intermodulation distortion where the bass frequencies will distort the mids and highs.  On Deadmau5's new track "Let Go" the effect is very noticeable when you turn them up (and not all that loud).  Playing the same track on my HD 600s, HD 650s, and HD 700s does NOT result in this distortion.  It isn't that the bass is distorting, it just interferes with the mids and highs.  These HD 599s are my daily driver (at work) and I REALLY like them.  They are a far more versatile than the HD 598s, they sound fantastic, and I don't regret the purchase at all.  At work I run them on a Schiit Modi 2 Uber/Magni 2 Uber stack and the pairing with the HD 599s is excellent.  The highs are also better on the HD 599s than the HD 598s (which struggled with "Sh" and "F" sounds).

**Q: Can you use these on a phone**
A: Yes. I have an earlier version, the HD598SR. They are compatible with phones and computers, and the short cable has a built-in microphone which will allow you to use it on phone calls. The longer cable doesn’t.

**Q: Can any recommend an amp for these? i was thinking of getting the objective 2 but if anyone else has a better one please tell me. p.s. i'm on a budget**
A: I powered the HD599s with my LG-G4 smartphone, an Acer Chromebook R-13 (excellent headphone section for a laptop), a Schiit Modi 2 Uber/ Vali 2 (Genalex Gold Lion 6922 tube) stack that I use at work (I also used a Schiit Magni 2 Uber with the Magni 2 Uber), and a Schiit Bifrost Multibit/Valhalla 2 (Genalex Gold Lion 6922 tubes)stack I have at home (I also used a Schiit Asgard 2 with the Bifrost).  I did/do not apply any equalization or effects when I listen.  Like all the higher end Sennheiser headphones, the HD599s improved noticeably as the driving components improved.  After a lot of listening to the 598s and 599s I concluded that they both sounded best when run through my Bifrost/Asgard 2 stack (The Modi 2U/ Magni 2U pairing was also excellent), so this is how I listened when doing my analysis.  Like most lower impedance headphones, they both seem to prefer solid state amps to OTL tube amps, but they did pair well with the Vali 2 (a hybrid tube amp) as well. I know the O2 is a brighter amp (and solid state) and would probably pair quite we with these.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Solid pair of Headphones. In-depth review

Amazing product, I don't usually write reviews but this one is worthy Why I bought the headphones: I play video games and my hyper x cloud alpha s cable was bent so the sound stopped working in one ear. They were about 2 years old so I decided to just upgrade my headphone setup and purchase headphones + a separate mic. Pros: - amazing soundstage - very lightweight - most comfortable ear pads I've ever worn - very good imaging - super easy to drive, so they sound very loud in most games if you need them to be - can wear for hours Cons: - Audiophiles may prefer 560s for less extension in mid-bass - no noise cancelation to speak of. This is nonissue for me, cause I don't need that. - clamping pressure may be too light, so more weight on top of head - plastic frame if you don't like plastic Gaming: For gaming, they are insanely good due to the imaging and soundstage. footsteps heard clearly in every direction, great for FPS games. I do recommend using an EQ though to boost the higher frequency sounds especially because footsteps are more treble-sided and the mid-bass is a tad heavy on these. See the image in this post for the EQ settings for gaming that I found work well in games like Valorant. I chose these over the 560s because the soundstage and imaging are better from what I have heard, and for gaming that is more important than a neutral sound. Audiophiles: Consider Sennheiser 560s if looking for more neutral sound. These headphones are a bit warm in the mid-bass area as I've said before, but you can technically fix it with an eq. they are also easier to drive than the 560s. However, the others are technically superior from out the box and only cost an extra 40-50 dollars or so. They may also be better with the higher clamping pressure so more of the 'weight' will be on the side of your head rather than the top. Conclusion: This is a top-tier headphone in the price range (probably the best) for gaming. Much better than any gaming headset, just buy a separate mic for like $30-60 if you need one. Razer siren mini and Fifine k678 are good options For audiophiles, the 560s might be a more neutral option at a very similar price range. Just get those instead unless looking for a warmer sound.
