I've had my best results with it when I drink it an hour before the "real work" starts. So say if practice is at 6:30 and you know the warm up is about 30 minutes, drink it at 6. I did feel an extra edge when using it this way.I also like using this before shorter distance races (5k-10k) in the same fashion. If you want to use it for a half, I would recommend drinking near the start of the race if you want a little extra boost midway. I tried it this way in a training running and had no stomach or GI issues with the product. I personally do not use it for half marathons and above, I prefer black tea before hand. But that is just a preference. I would not recommend this during a race however because of the delayed effects.
