It doesn't leave a gap at the wall. Just remove the wall plate, install the unit and tighten the screw to secure it to the wall. I like the way that they angled the plugs on the side, so the cords don't look so bunched up. You are able to get more "wall warts" plugged in this way, due to the extra spacing.
