Life's Missing Instruction Manual Epictetus (c. 50-135 CE) was brought as a slave to Rome, where he became a great teacher, deeply influencing the future emperor Marcus Aurelius among many others. His philosophy, Stoicism, was practical, not theoretical--aimed at relieving human suffering here and now. And Epictetus knew suffering. Besides being a former slave, he was lame in one leg and walked with a crutch. After a decade of teaching in Rome, he was banished by Emperor Domitian; undaunted, he established a school in Greece. The Manual is a collection of Epictetus' essential teachings and pithy sayings, compiled by his closet student. It is the most accessible and actionable guide to Stoic philosophy, as relevant today as it was in the Roman Empire. This new edition is rendered in contemporary English, with a foreword, by Sam Torode (based on a translation by Thomas Wentworth Higginson). Review: High-Quality Paraphrase of the Enchiridion - This is a high-quality paraphrase of the T.W. Higginson translation of the Enchiridion. Torode has done an excellent job of modernizing the text for contemporary readers. While I prefer reading the original translation, I find this paraphrase a good reference to turn to when a particular chapter in the original needs explaining from a layperson’s perspective. For me, a layperson’s perspective is more important than a scholar’s perspective since Stoicism is a practical philosophy, not an armchair philosophy. But I do believe the book’s introduction could be stronger. Highly recommended.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ High-Quality Paraphrase of the Enchiridion

This is a high-quality paraphrase of the T.W. Higginson translation of the Enchiridion. Torode has done an excellent job of modernizing the text for contemporary readers. While I prefer reading the original translation, I find this paraphrase a good reference to turn to when a particular chapter in the original needs explaining from a layperson’s perspective. For me, a layperson’s perspective is more important than a scholar’s perspective since Stoicism is a practical philosophy, not an armchair philosophy. But I do believe the book’s introduction could be stronger. Highly recommended.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ A quick but inclusive read

If philosophical studies and writings feel daunting or your readiness to look as deeply as is necessary to understand fully, the importance of the works... if you are looking to "better" yourself or your handling of the things you can control and the things you cannot, this is a good read for you. The author has taken liberties in old works to bring them to a "modern" person or a person new to these ideas in bite sized parts. This is a short read that has the potential to spark curiosity as well as renewed interest in philosophy.
