You need to press with both of your thumbs on either side (with your pointer fingers helping you pinch, so you keep each hand level). The shaft must be facing up, it is pretty much impossible to get them on if the clock mechanism is on its side rather than its back. It also helps to be standing up and leaning over the shaft so you are right on top of it. It is sort of like a layer cake, the hand with the biggest opening will go down to the top of the largest layer and stop. Then you add the hand with the next biggest opening, and so on. It isn't a matter of brute force, it is a matter of pressing on both sides at once and using finesse. You will feel it sort of "pop" on. Any angle and it will not go on at all. Once you get one on, it gets a lot easier because you get a sense of the feel of when it is on, rather than half perched on top without being truly on. It was frustrating for me, too, until I got it.
