Which number is the right colour for a dark colour? Seeing as they arent true to their colours (as i bought what i thought was a brown and was red)

I bought a 6 which is red and a 2 which is dark pink. Neither are very dark though. I use them as a base colour and apply clear lip gloss or coloured lipstick on top
