Can this switch be used for table lamps with a night light?? Worried it won't work properly.

Accepted Answer

Depends on the base of the night light.  If it is a standard-size bulb, and will fit the thread, it should be okay.  However, it is a 3-way switch on the one I got ... it would work with a night light, but a waste of a 3-way switch.  Also, what wattage is your night light?  If 25 W or more, should be okay.

Question 2

What is the highest bulb wattage you can use with this socket? I am looking for one that will use a  50 / 100 / 150  watt bulb.

I bought this to replaced a socket that supported 150 watt one.  However, the original socket was damaged from the heat of 150 watts.  I am currently using a flourescent 3-way, 150 watt replacement, rated at 16/25/32 watts.  This runs cooler and works fine for me.

My lamp needs the socket replaced. Standard. Could i replace it (1 way) with this (3 way) ok? would it then be 3 way then? What watts 100/150/200 etc?

No. A standard screw lamp socket has only two electrical contacts. In the center of the bottom of a standard socket is the hot contact which typically looks like a small metal tongue bent over. The threaded metal shell is itself the neutral contact. When a standard bulb is screwed into a standard socket, a matching contact on the bottom of the bulb presses against the metal tongue in the center of the socket, creating the live connection. The metal threads of the bulb base touch the socket shell, which creates the neutral connection, and this is how the electrical circuit is completed.A 3-way socket has three electrical contacts. In addition to the two contacts of the standard socket, a third contact is added. This contact is positioned off-center in the bottom of the socket. This extra contact matches a ring-shaped contact on the bottom of a 3-way bulb, which creates the connection for the second filament inside the bulb. I got this information from Wikipedia. Can you use this as a replacement to make any old lamp a three way lamp?

Asking "will any old lamp" doesn't cover a number of possible limitations. Both "On/Off sockets" and "Three-way sockets" fit in the same space and connect to the same two-lead electrical cord...  But many lamp designs won't be able to properly dissipate the heat produced by running higher watt bulbs (150 -225 watt), or even be able to accept the larger physical size of three-way bulbs.  So yes, the three-way switch is a direct replacement and will fit in the same space as an On/Off switch, but the rest of your individual lamp might not be right for that change.
