I'm using it not for gate opening but to trip my home automation system so that when we drive up the driveway it turns on exterior lights at the house at night. The cheaper GTO one worked for a few days after I installed it, then it became intermittent, and shortly thereafter it just quit entirely. Since digging them up is a pain, I didn't want to replace it with the same unit, even with a new one. Read the reviews on this one which were quite positive and it has both NC and NO contacts on the relay (which the GTO did not have), so I bought it. So far very happy with it. Good build quality and is working as it should. Yes, the GTO one was $130 versus $200 for this guy, but the savings isn't worth having to dig up the GTO and now having an underground splice where I swapped it for this one. Though there was no way to tell if I was getting 3 wire or 5 wire (you'd think it would be in the product name or nomenclature, right?), I was happy to open box and find a 5 wire.The RSL 12U uses the NO configuration, so the blue and black wires go to the exit terminals. The blue wire is actually more of a pale gray - color blind folks might have major problems telling the wire colors apart, because the color coding is not clean. Cartell ought to think about either labeling each wire or adding various patterns to the wires - pale green and pale blue just don't stand out enough!Unit itself seems pretty hardy, and cable insulation is also sturdy.
