Review: The ideal practice/late night noodling amp - i’m a long time hobbyist guitar player of several decades and I have several nice larger combo amps. I was specifically looking for something that was simple, didn’t have a bunch of presets, app connectivity or other gimmicks on it, something that was just immediate, small, quiet and still sounded halfway decent. Figured I’d give this thing a shot. For the price, you can’t really go wrong even if it’s just OK. Well, it’s better than OK. It sounds surprisingly good and it’s really fun to play! I like that you aren’t overwhelmed with choices. You get gain, volume, EQ and a limited but useful little delay effect to give you Some ambience. All three channels sound great no matter how you set the gain or EQ on the amp. It’s like they really confined the ranges of the controls to keep the thing sounding good. I’m especially surprised at how smooth the distortion is. On old cheap solid state amps of this size, you would usually get a bone-dry clean sound or this really awful, staticky distortion, and nothing in between. The distortion on this actually sounds pleasing and smooth, and it doesn’t do that flubby farty thing when you crank it up like some amp distortion does. This began my quest for the perfect practice amp... after trying about 5 others, I finally found this jewel. Here’s why I love it: 1. It’s the perfect size and weight. It’s small enough that you can set it pretty much anywhere (your desk, coffee table, on the couch beside you, etc). But it’s heavy and big enough that it does not tip over and it feels like a “real” amp. Although it is quite small. 2. It has the perfect amount of tone control for a practice amp. Gain and master volume with Clean, crunch, and brown settings and with bass, mids, and treble controls. Add to that the delay settings and it’s perfect. Not too many things to waist your time fiddling with - but just enough so you can quickly dial in a perfect and great tone for whatever you are trying to play. 3. It has the perfect volume. Many of the small practice amps still need to be pretty loud to sound good. This little guy sounds awesome at low volume. You can use a power supply (not included) when convenient to save battery money. Now for a couple of things to be aware of: 1. It does not come with a power supply, you’ll have to buy one separately (9v 500ma aka .5a with a negative center). I found one on desertcart for 12 bucks. 2. It does come with a set of AA batteries, and I used it all day with just the batteries and they still seam fine. I’m not sure yet how many days they’ll last though... 3. This amp probably could not be used for a full band practice IMO. The sound is just not big enough for that. This thing is awesome. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ An excellent practice amp *by A***F on January 2, 2018* With realistic expectations most will find this to be an excellent, portable practice amp with really fantastic, fun sounds. It does not sound like your 1x10 or 1x12 combo - it can't. But it produces inspiring, room-filling sounds that defy logic. I didn't want something with a ton of effects, and this only has a delay which can get you a small room reverb, slapback or a longer delay with a few repeats. I prefer reverb, but this works fine to give some ambiance. The EQ works pretty well, but you don't get a huge amount of variance - this will never produce huge bass, but it can give you pleasingly warm, larger-than-expected guitar sounds. You can dial in a substantial variety of tones with the gain knob - clean can get pretty crunchy, and you can get a clean sound out of the crunch channel, etc. The headphone out sounds really good - basically just like the speaker - and an aux in lets you pipe in jam tracks or whatever you want to play along to. I've gotten over 12 hours of life from my first set of batteries - and still going strong, but I play at conversation level. Cranked this gets loud, but about what you'd expect from something this size. You could be heard if you tried to busk with it, but even dimed the volume isn't substantial - but it's plenty loud for what it's intended to be. This is exactly what I wanted - it sounds great and is very portable. I now plug in to practice in places where I used to just play an unplugged electric guitar. It makes practice more fun, and I find I'm practicing more. Without a ton of effects to hide behind I practice better - I can hear when I make a mistake. The Blackstar Fly 3 is cheaper - I don't know if it's better, I don't have any way to compare.
