It’s hard to grow Barbados cherry plants from seed – they take forever to germinate (more than 6 months) if they germinate at all. If requires some patience. Barbados cherries are tart, not super sweet, and taste a little bit like an apple. They have three seeds inside instead of one pit. Barbados cherries also don’t keep well and need to be eaten within a few days after picking. That means you won’t find them at the grocery store. **Q: How fast growing are these trees?** A: The one that was sold to me did not survive **Q: Is this self pollinating?** A: Yes, the Barbados Cherry tree is self-pollinating/self-fertile. **Q: Can it grow in Chicago IL?** A: I believe it can grow in a pot, this way you can bring it inside the garage or home to protect it from the cold weather during the winter. Chicago gets very cold in winter and the acerola tree is used to tropical warmer temperatures. If you decide to plant it in the ground I suggest building a sturdy greenhouse around it - you can leave the frames metal or wood around the year uncovered to receive sunlight and only cover with tarp maybe some plankets, but triple plankets during cold freezing days would be safe also add some lights inside as a source of heat. I was surprised how the soil was very moist, healthy with no pesky fungus gnats and both plants had some cute little πŸƒgreen leafs. The stems looked healthy and in great shape. Sadly one plant lost a few leafs during the shipping, but that happens since plants are very sensitive. The condition of the plants look really good, and I feel like at this point if they don't make it, it will be because of the new soil, environment, and definitely the weather and not the supplier. Sometimes i read reviews where people get their plants in great shape, but later on the plants don't make it and they blame the business, but in all reality if the plant arrives healthy like mine did, it means the person who bought the plant did something wrong after arrival, the soil conditions, pests that come in most soils bought from the stores like fungus gnats. I'm very happy and satisfied and will purchase more plants from this place in the future. For the price, I think these are great investments. Avoid at all costs! *by M***. on July 19, 2024* The item arrived DOA. The leaves were all wilted and proceeded to all fall off in a quick matter of time leaving this little one with ZERO viable leaves. The soil was absolutely flooded when I opened the bag and I suspect that that had something to do with it. BE AWARE!!!! This is NOT a tree grown from seed. This is NOT a seedling. Upon inspection I discovered that this is simply a twig that was placed in rooting hormone that was coaxed along to shoot out some roots. More often than not this type of propgation does not survive depending on the species of plant. Even if id does you are growin from a BRANCH and the plant has real uphill battle. This is NOT a mature seeding! I feel absolutely scammed. Looking at the reviews of others I see that I was not the only one. What a disaster! I paid a lot of money for a twig. Again, I stress...this is not propagated from seed. This is simply a scion CUTTING. In layman's terms that is just a branch dipped with powder chemical (rooting hormone) to get it to grow. The item came infested with insects as well and should be garbage bound on arrival as not to infect the rest of my houseplants. What a failure! I am asking for a refund. For the all of the money to have to find out that you purchased a 3 inch size TWIG and not a tree that really is shocking. DOA and a horrible experience. I was a first time buyer from the seller and was skeptical at first, however, I decided to give it a go. Do I absolutely regret that.
