I am giving this a five star because you can't give a 4 1/2. The following is information that would have helped me:1. Check the table leg for cracks as soon as you get it. I read the reviews and knew that some of the tables were showing up with a crack in the leg. I opened mine right away, saw the giant crack and contacted amazon. They had me send mine back for free and sent me a new one. The new one is perfect. Do not gift it without checking it!2. The squares are 1 3/4"x 1 3/4". If you are looking to buy nicer weighted pieces you will want to know this.3. The pieces that come with the set are not weighted, but are nice enough. They look nice but they are very light. There is felt on the bottom. I considered buying new ones but they are good enough for now. A new nicer weighted set on amazon runs between $30-45.4. This set does not come with backgammon/checkers. If you want them you will need to purchase them separately.5. Backgammon requires 30 checker pieces (15 per person) to play so if you are going to buy checkers to go with this you either have to get two 24 piece sets or order "backgammon" sets. I ended up ordering backgammon pieces from somewhere else due to lack of amazon choices. You will also want to buy a set of dice, a cup, and a doubling cube.6. If you are going to buy nicer chess pieces to go with this set, and you want to store them in the table, make sure they are not to big! I measured the space under the top and it is just about 1 7/16" inches. It is hard to measure because some of the space is due to the table top. Some of the bigger sets might not fit. Note the chess piece bottom diameter when you are buying.7. So you can compare, I measured the king that came with the set. The kings height is 3 3/4" (9 1/2 cm)and the diameter (side to side on the bottom of the piece) is 1 7/16" (3.5cm).8. This table is not black, it is cherry. I was actually happy with this, but it looks black in the picture so you need to make a note of it.I hope this helps. It would have helped me!

The table itself is beautiful and the idea is lovely, but the design is horrible. Three legs instead of four causes the table to be majorly unstable and two of the legs completely broke off because they are attached by nothing more than sliding into a little slot made of cheap veneer! So, basically, I paid a lot of money for a chess board. Ugh.

Purchased as a family Christmas gift last year. It was very easy to assemble and well made. There was one scuff on the bottom piece, picture attached, but it was not an issue at all. Could easily be touched up with a wood stain marker. For the price and the ease of assembly, would absolutely go back and repurchase again!

The table itself appears as advertised. It has a really nice smooth finish, no scratches, and takes less than a minute to assemble. Be sure you check for damage when you get it, though.I’d compare the table’s quality to something you’d find at Ikea. Durable, clean, easy to assemble.When you lift the very top of the table, which fits really nicely on top of the table stand, the compartment is black felt lined. Looks nice, clean, well put together. The flip side of the chess board is a checker board, reversible depending which side you put facing up.My advice: but your chess pieces separately. The pieces are definitely garbage, they draw value away from how nice the table is. The pieces are magnetic for a board that is not magnetic, lightweight junk you could buy at the dollar store.The table is really cute, a little shorter than I’d like, has a slightly more orange color than mahogany. But I like it, and it is a nice table.

I don't write many reviews but felt like I should with this item. It's nice. The base is a cherry wood color where the table is more of a lighter, weathered looking wood color but they look fine together. The chess pieces are wood and actually quite large which is nice. The pieces are very light but they look good and play fine . Overall for what I paid for this chess table I'm very pleased. Setup is a breeze. 3 minutes.

Let me bet the one negative out of the way. One side of the table top was not attached. Got some glue. Easy fix. The fact that it was soooooo easy to assemble is the reason I'm still giving it 5 stars. I didn't even need tool. The pieces just screwed or slid into place. Simple, yet ingenious. It took about a two minutes, if that. The checkers are plain but hey, they're checkers. The chess pieces are descent, but kinda small. I got a more robust looking set. Odd: The description said it didn't have backgammon pieces, but the checkers work just fine for it. Either way, a great buy.

I should start by saying that the product in itself is great, however, the way it arrived was the huge problem. My dad opened it as a gift Christmas day to find that the center pole was completely split from top to bottom. It happens, but that wasn't the biggest problem. The big problem was that I could see that someone bought the item from Sears and returned it to Sears because it was damaged. Sears sold it to Amazon and I bought this "new" item from Amazon. I could see all the tracking and that the packaged went unopened and unchecked by Amazon. I can see the lady's name, address, and phone number who bought it from Sears 2 months before I bought it from Amazon. Luckily I am an honest citizen and I will throw this out, but Amazon should do a better job at protecting sensitive information. This was extremely embarrassing watching my dad open this and see all this on Christmas Day. They are going to send a new (hopefully new this time) table and I was instructed to send the old one back. I just wish they would have cared a little more about previous customer's sensitive information.
