There's a lot to like about V , an exceptionally well-made series combining science fiction, action-adventure, and personal drama (and debuting here on DVD with all 12 first-season episodes on three discs). From the moment 29 enormous spaceships appear over an equal number of major cities (the principal action takes place in New York and aboard the mother ship that hovers over it), nothing will ever be the same. But the Visitors, commonly known as Vs, "are of peace"--or so says Anna (Morena Baccarin), their young, beautiful, preternaturally serene leader (the Vs look human, but as we soon discover, their appearance is only one part of them that isn't what it seems). Folks around the globe are smitten as the Vs perform Christ-like medical miracles and use their awesome technology and messianic powers of persuasion to wow the Earthlings--especially a smarmy, headline-hugging TV "journalist" (Scott Wolf) who becomes their willing mouthpiece, helping the Vs seduce the entire global populationโฆ almost. Of course, there are some who know better, specifically the "Fifth Column," a resistance group comprised of humans (with Elizabeth Mitchell as an FBI agent whose son is in thrall to the aliens) and a few "traitor" Vs who've lived on Earth for years (including Morris Chestnut as a V whose human girlfriend is pregnant). They know what the Visitors' real agenda is--and that dirty deeds like establishing terror cells and surreptitiously injecting drugs into humans are only the beginning. All of this is offered in a very slick, entertaining package; the plotting is clever and just unpredictable enough, the effects work is outstanding (especially good is a technique whereby Vs on their mother ship are rendered like video game characters), and while V is hardly what you'd call profound, it does touch on some interesting ideas (such as the role of emotions, of which the Vs have none, or the danger of putting one's faith in false gods). That will help viewers overlook some of the show's more dubious elements. For instance, the utter gullibility of the vast majority of humans in the face of the aliens' transparent duplicity is preposterous, even by sci-fi standards; by the same token, it's hard to swallow that the Fifth Column, which seems to consist of about four people, could possibly pose a threat to the omnipotent Visitors. Still, by the time it reaches its season-ending cliffhanger, V has given us more than enough reasons to tune in again next year. --Sam Graham V: The Complete First Season Elizabeth Mitchell (Lost) stars in this reimagining of the hit miniseries. โVisitorsโ appear in every major city, promoting a message of peace โฆ but are they a threat to our existence? As the world becomes fascinated with the V's, FBI Counter Terrorist Agent Erica Evans (Mitchell) discovers a secret that may threaten the lives of everyone close to her, including her teenage son, Tyler (Logan Huffman), who sees the V's as a new chance for mankind. For Chad Decker (Scott Wolf), a career-hungry news anchor, his exclusive interviews with the leader of the V's, Anna (Morena Baccarin), are vital to his dominating the airwaves. Father Jack (Joel Gretsch), a priest questioning his faith, is unsure about the V's. Seeking answers outside the church, he discovers there are other dissidents, like Ryan Nichols (Morris Chestnut), who is faced with his own life-altering decision. Review: Too bad the show was discontinued before it was resolved. - The re-do of "V" (there was a previous "V" back in the mid-80s) lasted only two seasons and was terminated before the entire story-line played out. This was unfortunate, because the series was well-written and well-acted. (I understand there is an organized fan movement to have the show resurrected.) The basic story is that the earth has been invaded by an alien race who become known as "the Visitors," or "the V's" for short. The aliens are led by Anna (Morena Baccarin), a beautiful and charming but privately ruthless leader, who puts a benign, pretty face on top of what is basically a plot to destroy the human race and take over the world. Anna and the aliens are opposed by "the Fifth Column," a small group of humans and alien-defectors who know what is really going on. They are led by FBI agent Erica Evans (Elizabeth Mitchell), whose own son Tyler (Logan Huffman) has been targeted by the aliens to play an important but unspecified role in their plans. Other prominent members of the resistance include a Catholic priest, Father Jack Landry (Joel Gretsch) and Ryan (Morris Chestnut), an alien who has defected after developing human-like emotions and attachments. Caught in the middle is prominent news anchor Chad Decker (Scott Wolf), who - despite his occasional misgivings - allows himself to be used by Anna as a tool of her propaganda. The human race is divided over the aliens. Many are deceived by their show of benevolence and their ability to produce medical marvels and other feats of superior technology. The Visitors use sex appeal and idealism to recruit young human "ambassadors" to act is go-betweens between the aliens and humans. The ambassadors - who include Erica's son Tyler - are unwitting tools of the aliens' program. A minority of humans continue to harbor suspicion of - and hostility towards - the aliens, but the aliens are effective propagandists who overcome most resistance through their medical marvels and technological gifts. In some ways, the show calls to mind the 1960's series, The Invaders. The aliens have infiltrated human society over many years, and are virtually indistinguishable from ordinary humans. (Their true appearance is reptilian, but they have replicated human skin and facial features.) The infiltration of the Visitors into all walks of life puts the members of the resistance in a state of paranoia, as they can never trust someone not to be an alien in disguise. (They eventually develop a test by which an alien can be identified.) Another nod to The Invaders is that when the aliens are in jeopardy of being captured, they swallow a suicide pill which consumes their bodies in flames in a matter of seconds, destroying the evidence of their true nature. The plots typically involve the efforts of the Visitors to spread their influence and control over human society, efforts which are countered by the resistance, and then counter-countered by the Visitors. Newsman Chad Decker is often caught in the middle, typically acting as a vehicle for alien propaganda even as his suspicions grow. For me - and I am not alone in this - "V" often reminds me of political events in real life, and sometimes refers to those events (e.g., 9/11) explicitly. "V" is not, however, a piece of political propaganda, even though I think that conservatives will find more to like in this show than in a typical TV drama. I think "V" is an entertaining series, and hope that it is resurrected and allowed to reach its final climax. (I will not do a separate review of Season 2, other than to say that it continues to entertain and add new elements to the story. Each episode reveals something new, and you never get the impression that the series is spinning its wheels or "jumping the shark".) Review: V -Great TV show - This is a great TV show.

Loved it. Can't wait for season 2 .
I can't understand the 7 bad reviews for this show I read but whatever. I'm an average sci-fi fan who thought the 'V' of 25 yrs ago was 'ok' but this updated version is terrific. And the ultimate compliment to it is that in season 1 you get a mere glimpse of what the aliens 'really' look like and yet the show is compelling and creepy and utterly entertaining. The show is totally made by the perfomance of Morena Baccarin who plays 'Anna' the alien Queen. She is so beautiful, creepy, and deadly you almost wind up rooting for her in her quest to wipe out Earth! Her counterpart Elizabeth Mitchell as the FBI Agent on Earth trying to expose the 'V's' is also terrific. It is this battle between two Mothers that actually drives the show. The supporting cast of Joel Gretsch as Father Jack, Scott Wolf as a self serving journalist, and the gorgeous Laura Vandervoort as Anna's daughter are all great additional characters on the show. Post 911 fears; idolatry; wanting someone or something to 'fix' all our problems; these are just a few of the issues dealt with on 'V'. I really, really liked it and didn't think I would. I will definitely purchase season 2 when its available.

Not Quite As Good As The Original
However, you can say that about every film (except Godfather II). The series was good and the special effects were great. (This is just the first season remember). The steelbooks are the sets to get. Great collectibles, especially if you can get them at this low a price for an entire season. The only problem was the steelbook had two small dents on the front. (That stuff always irritates me, but now bad enough to send back for a replacement). I think you'll enjoy this remake and Season Two is also available but for a lot higher price. It also doesn't come in a steelbook. I haven't seen the second season so I can't tell you if it's worth buying or not you'll have to make that decision yourself. However, expect to receive the usual great customer service from Amazon.com. They are always a '5 Star' group.

Excellent remake of a classic
As a big fan of the original, I had concerns about the remake, especially in the format of hour-long drama. Half-way through the first season, however, my concerns had vanished. While not as thought-provoking as the original miniseries, the remake is less campy, with much darker villains and more complex plot lines which should enable the writers to keep the stories fresh for several seasons. The dialogue is sharp and fast-paced, similar to the early episodes of The 4400 or The Shield. Multiple story lines raise questions without immediate answers, similar to Lost (before Lost lost its way after season 3). Overall, a highly entertaining, original (even as a remake) show that is completely engrossing when watched without commercials.

One of the best "re-imagined" series on TV!
I must admit I was skeptical at first because I was such a huge fan of the original 80s series, but I gotta admit this series ROCKS! The storyline is very unique and is one of the few shows that still leaves you hanging on the edge on what's going to happen in the next episode! Wikipedia mentions that some of the original actors might appear in the new series as special quest stars. I would love to see Jane Badler back as a "High Mother" Visitor who is even more powerful than Anna! P.S. Who thinks that "JOHN MAY LIVES" is an anagram? Of course we found out that he was a real Visitor but something in the back of my mind things that those three words put together underlies another message than just that of summoning the 5th Column members to arms.

I Love this movie...BUT...
Loved this movie.. BUT... This item is listed incorrectly. It says season 1 but it is actually part 1 of season 2, I have already received the entire season 2.a couple weeks ago,. It had a different cover on the DVD .. Season 1 was actually from 1983. Where it all began with Diana and the other visitors.. Season 2 ,starts out with Anna.. It has been a long time since viewing season 1.. So, after starting to watch season 2 (which I ordered and received 2 weeks ago) I felt a little lost and wanted to rematch season 1..where it REALLY all began.. So I was quite disappointed when I excitedly opened the package and it wasn't as advertised.. Please change listing it is VERY. Misleading.. And you will be getting many more returns from otherunhappy costomers.

Don't Expect the Original V
As a die hard fan of the original V I had mixed feelings about the newest reboot of it. The original was definitely EVENT television, and the reveal that the Visitors were actually lizards in human skin was pretty shocking at the time. This time around, we know all that, so what could a new series have to offer? Well the premise is the same: ominous alien ships hover over major cities world wide with the aliens offering peace and a better world. Where it differs is that while these aliens are not telling the truth much as in the original, we still don't know what it is they want. As a previous poster mentioned it suffers from the "Lost" syndrome. Or for that matter, the "X-Files" syndrome. Unless the new show plans to go a totally different route from the original, we already KNOW what they want, so there really is no need to keep us guessing and dragging things out over several seasons. Just get to it! But the new changes are intriguing. That the aliens have been on Earth for quite awhile, and we do not know who they are and we can't trust anyone. Yes, shades of X-Files and Battlestar Galactica, but both were excellent shows and no shame in borrowing a few things from them. The acting is superb, especially Elizabeth Mitchell and Morena Baccarin as Erika and Anna respectively. I won't reveal anything of the plot, but expect a showdown between those two strong characters at some future point if/when season 2 starts. Another thing I like about the new season is that the Aliens actually are alien. In the original, they were basically just bad people (similar to Nazi's). This time around there actually does seem to be a totally alien culture that on the surface seems human, but in fact seems almost insectile. Definitely a show worth investing your time in.
