When relief workers bring used clothing to the refugee camp, everyone scrambles to grab whatever they can. Ten-year-old Lina is thrilled when she finds a sandal that fits her foot perfectly, until she sees that another girl has the matching shoe. But soon Lina and Feroza meet and decide that it is better to share the sandals than for each to wear only one. As the girls go about their routines -- washing clothes in the river, waiting in long lines for water, and watching for their names to appear on the list to go to America -- the sandals remind them that friendship is what is most important. Four Feet, Two Sandals was inspired by a refugee girl who asked the authors why there were no books about children like her. With warm colors and sensitive brush strokes, this book portrays the strength, courage, and hope of refugees around the world, whose daily existence is marked by uncertainty and fear. Review: Excellent addition to our library - This is an incredible book to introduce children in an age appropriate way to the realities that families all across the world are facing. The story is both heartbreaking and hopeful. Review: Exceptional for teaching empathy - I challenge you to read this story to your kids without pausing to cry your eyes out. What a great story and the best way to teach them empathy. Was perfect for the classroom to wrap up Thanksgiving week- all the children were left speechless and thoughtful. What a different perspective for them to think about! It would make a great Christmas gift also.

Every person can relate. So discussion-worthy!
Great way to teach kids empathy, sharing, and the challenges of war refugees. The more we create desperate nomads by continuing wars, the more our children need to know how fortunate they are to have a home and how destructive hatreds and prejudices can be to people just like themselves.

Wonderful story of a timely subject
How many refugee children in the world today are without access to education in temporary camps or shelters? More than I could imagine most likely. The author presents a desperate situation with kind and loving attention and details. We gave this as a gift to my daughter's Girl Scout troop to recognize World Thinking Day. Raises important subjects for upper elementary students such as casualties of war, equal access to education, fairness, sharing, loss of one's home, and many others.

Humbling
Beautifully illustrated, crisply-written. A must-have for any school library. One thing that could have been easily left out - the name of the country the refugees get relocated to. A little bit of mystery is not such a bad thing. Plus, we Americans like America's greener pasturers to be left to our own lot sometimes. That bit at the end could put some readers out and destroy the purpose of the book - which is to show the girl's delicate friendship and how they manage, even in hard times, to simply survive. All in all, a classic.

Heartwarming and beautifully written
I bought this book for recently arrived refugee girls who understand some English. I read it immediately and had tears in my eyes by the end. The story of the brief encounter of two Afghan girls would become a lasting bond because of a pair of shoes. I expect to sit with my little friends and read it with them.

Moving story and beautiful pictures
I found this book on the 'I am your neighbor' book list. It is a simple story about 2 girls in a refugee camp waiting for resettlement. The book has beautiful illustrations in warm colors. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to help their kids / students to learn more about refugees and their difficult journey to safety.

GREAT LEARNING TOOL
Four Feet, Two Sandals is a wonderful learning tool. I think that our kids (and in this case grandkids) really have no idea how very very blessed we are in this country. I believe it is important for them to understand, as far as possible, that there are kids in the world just like them who lead very different lives. Not only do they not have their own I-Pod and DS, they do not even have their own pair of shoes! Stories such as Four Feet, Two Sandals make them more aware of the big world they live in.

Wonderful
Great story. Really hits home how much well off we truly are. Useful to introduce to younger children who never has to live in any hardships.

Aimed at a Upper Elementary audience
This book was very helpful in building understanding of the effects of war. I used it as an introduction to the study of The Breadwinner, by Debra Ellis.

simple powerful and accessible story on sharing in another part of the world
This is a beautiful and important story that my 6-year old girls quickly grew fond of. It very simply and clearly portrays a starkly different part of our world, where others' lives are very different to our own. Unfortunately in our particular household, the issue of "1 [particular] pair of shoes, and four feet" has been an occasionally recurring issue though for very opposite and humdrum reasons, so the story was particularly accessible and articulate for them.
