Well designed, engineered and right wood, easy to put together.
I bought to replace a completely inadequate "sleeper sofa" in a travel trailer slide out. My problem was that the inside "length/width" side to side of the slideout was 73.5 inches. Everything including this is 74 inches or 74 1/2 inches. I looked and looked and looked and with metal, there is "no give" on the width. I finally took a hard look at this and figured since it was wood, I could cut it down...just enough to fit. So, did it work? Yes but... This is very well engineered and designed and that all assume you are NOT going to cut it down to size like I did. But you have to be careful. The best way, in retrospect is to cut BOTH edges and not just one off including losing one of the dowels on each side. That worried me for structural integrity, but it is a bit over engineered where all of the other pieces once together compensate. And in the end, it all went together and is structurally sound... I had purchased metal support pieces and extra screws assuming I would need them when I did NOT. I did have to do a couple of my own "pilot" holes to ensure a good bite with the screws, but in the end, it works great and is the ONLY thing that will fit. I now have a full size futon that extends out perfectly so when in "sofa" mode it allows the slide to move in without hitting anything. Then when you get to the campground, put it in bed mode with a good six inch mattress and a true real life adult can actually sleep on it...comfortably... I am very pleased and by having to adapt it with a bit of engineering/construction background, I was able to see how well designed and constructed it was for people who do NOT have to adapt it including cutting off edges and structural dowel fasteners. Great product AND, drum roll please, American made... And for what you get, pretty inexpensive compared to anything else on Amazon even before the tariffs. Including a high quality six inch futon mattress my total price was 398 bucks. I am impressed. The only weakness would be individual units where a piece might be cut where the grain creates a structural "break point" and a screw could break it or stress. But I see at least one other buyer who had this happen and the company responded on a weekend and immediately sent out a replacement part. So, I'm thinking they are aware of it and have excellent customer service to address it. This is due to their choice of wood and its intrinsic quick growth grain orientation, however tulip poplar is a great choice of wood for this overall, relatively inexpensive, light, good construction characteristics overall for this type of product. This was well thought out by whomever runs this company.

Initial Impression Is Excellent!
Finished putting the futon frame into place and a futon onto it not too long ago. Here is how it went for us: Everything arrived safely together, no missing parts and no damage. All the wood pieces seem well sanded and not likely to cause splinters. Wood grain was smooth and relatively even. If we planned on finishing the frame I think it would look decent with a stain or you could paint it readily enough. I would recommend finishing BEFORE assembly, although you would have to keep track of the parts a bit more closely. Even then, all the parts are pretty clear from their shape and where holes are located. Assembly did not take long at all and the instructions were clear and easy to understand. The only tool you really need is a Phillips-head screw driver, although a rubber mallet to tap things together would not hurt. Parts fit together cleanly and evenly, and as mentioned before, it is tough to mix them up. They even had an extra step to make SURE you got the pieces from the first couple steps right, which seemed like a nice check (maybe a lesson learned sometime). The only things I could think of to change about the assembly/design would be replacing some of the screws with a couple more Clevis pins and a couple felt pads. This way someone could disassemble more of it for even easier storage or moving it around. Maybe making it so you could take the seat and back sections off completely. The felt pads could be for the feet, just to protect flooring a bit from the wood. Totally just personal impressions though and neither are things that detract from the frame in my book. Once assembled the frame was easy to carry into the room where we wanted it. Not too heavy and it did not wobble around a lot like some furniture pieces so I did not have to worry about smacking walls or trim. Futon fit perfectly on it. It COULD be a little easier to lift to a sitting position (maybe I will put a pull strap at the center of the back) but that was mostly due to our putting it in a corner. Overall impression: Excellent. Looks good, seems sturdy, decent design, and has decent construction. Made in the USA is awesome and you really cannot knock the warranty although I am not sure how likely it is we would ever need to use it.

Solid futon, no squeaking, mostly good design
This was easy to assemble, the manufacturer video helped. My sixteen year old son put it together almost completely on his own in under an hour. There was just one piece that required two people to use a little extra force - the holes were just slightly off, so we thought we'd need to return it, but were able to make it work. I also had to tap new holes where the pre-drilled ones on the assembled platform didn't quite match up with the base frame. They lined up the screw too close to the edge of the piece below and would have split the wood. But not a big deal if you're paying attention and just line up the screw in a better spot. We like this bed because others in this price range are made of metal and tend to squeak when you move or adjust. And it doesn't have armrests and such on the sides, which for some people is a con, but if it's going in a little tighter space this is perfect. The wheels are great for quickly moving it in and out from the wall when transitioning between bed and couch, and it adjusts positions easily. The only major complaint is there is no bracket or stopper on the front when in couch position to hold the mattress in place. It doesn't seem to slide off while sitting on it, but it needs to be lifted back in place once the futon is placed back in the bed position. This is only mildly annoying. I'm going to look at the hardware store for something I could fix this problem with. For a teen or adult using this futon, it's not difficult to move the mattress when it slides. But if you're getting this for smaller children it could become laborious. Overall, I think it's a really great simple piece of furniture. We've only had it together for a month, so I'm not sure yet about standing the test of time, but there don't seem to be any immediately obvious weaknesses I'm concerned about.

Perfect!
Made in the USA ... as far as I know. Exactly as described. Easy to assemble. Mind you my son-in-law put it together for me, but didn't seem to have any issues even with me rambling on and distracting him. A powered screwdriver was in use. No creakiness. The wooden boards run length-wise similar to a standard bench, which makes it more comfortable for sleeping, since they run the length of the body. It's super sturdy. My only complaint is the space between boards in the seat and back area is 3.5 inches and 4.5 inches in the middle (between the seat and back). In a perfect world the boards would be wider or there would be less space between them. The construction itself works perfectly well for general use as extra seating or an extra guest sleeping solution. For everyday use, some extra support such as cardboard or coroplast sheets may be needed to fill those gaps. I would also recommend a non-slip futon grip pad or yoga mat for the seating area to keep your mattress in place so it isn't slipping out. Fortunately, any futon mattress will work with this frame. And I do mean any, from a Japanese style floor mattress, to a cheap 6 in. futon mattress, to an expensive innerspring mattress, to whatever your heart desires. It is relatively easy to lift the back support beam into 1 of 4 seating positions from one side of the frame. It will fit into pre-formed grooves allowing your desired angle of comfort. If you have a heavier (thicker) futon mattress, you may need to remove the mattress to lift the back into the desired setting, physically move the frame back to where you would like it to be situated, and then place and adjust the mattress as necessary. I am a heavy person, weighing in at about 300 lbs with some back problems (spondylosis, osteoarthritis, etc.), living in a small apartment with limited space, and have found this to be a very viable solution to seating and sleeping arrangements. I actually prefer this over my standard full sized bed with a 12 inch foam mattress for sleeping. I have much less stiffness and more mobility after casually falling asleep on the futon watching a movie to sleeping on the bed that's supposed to support and align my spine. The futon mattress may need to be replaced from time to time, but this is a well crafted and sturdy frame that I expect to hold up for many years to come! Overall, I would recommend this frame over any other that is out there or I have tried in the past. And did I mention, made in the USA, enough said.

Get it! It's the best option for the price.
I can't speak for others, but mine was great. easy to assemble and quite simple. The instructions are clear but they don't hold your hand through the process. It took me about 30 minutes with a screwdriver and a mallet to assemble it. Some parts are a bit tricky, you have to be patient and gently massage it together, but persevere and you will be rewarded. Its nicely sanded, but unfinished wood, you can stain or paint and seal if you like. I might in the future, but I am fine with how it is. I don't think it is a heirloom piece, at this price they did have to make it a very simple design and assembly. I could see it wearing out eventually if you convert it often, but still years of use at least if care for a little. I wouldn't jump on it or anything, it is a futon after all, but for the cost I challenge you to find a better futon. I sleep on it every night and I love it. It is great to be able to have a couch to lounge on whenever I feel. It changes the mood of my room instantly. I want to share, my strategy was to spend most of my budget on the mattress, because after all, that is where the rubber meets the road. I got the nicest, thickest futon mattress I could afford (more expensive that the frame actually) and a non-slip mat to keep it from sliding when in couch mode. It is positively luxurious, I kid you not. This frame, good mattress and cover, solid furniture investment. Would buy again.

Solid, straightforward, exactly as expected
This futon frame came in the most efficient possible packaging, with tremendously clear instructions. I didn't see this in the description, but it's made entirely domestically in Athens, GA; it's rare to be able to buy a reasonably priced product that didn't get shipped in from overseas - extra kudos for that. Frame is entirely wood (Tulip Poplar) and connected with wooden dowels and metal fittings - I like that it's all natural, and fairly sustainable materials. Instructions, as I said above, are quite clear - clearer than IKEA, in truth. I would recommend a screwgun and rubber mallet for assembly - some of the dowel connections were (appropriately) tight, and you're sinking about 30 screws. Using those tools, it took me about 50 minutes, on my own, to have it assembled and in place. When putting on the side and back braces, just look for the pre-drilled hole at the ends to make sure you've aligned them correctly - that's the only even possibly unclear part of the instructions. In terms of comfort - that's all going to be on the futon mattress. It is, in the end, a series of wooden slats, so if you have a thin mattress, you're going to feel the slats. Two extra nice things about this frame: 1 there are wheels on the part of the frame that faces the wall, so it can be lifted and rolled, dolly-like, away from the wall for easy opening. 2. there's no center rail - so, no single higher piece of wood poking you in the back when you lie down to sleep on this, unlike many other futons. Now - I just put this together, and sat on it briefly - I'll come back to this review if it falls apart or anything - but, right now, I have to offer up big cheers to KD Frames for this simple, practical, well made futon frame.

C+ construction, not bad for the price.
I wasn't hoping for too much from this futon frame at the cost that it was offered at. The wood is solid, and the frame seems like it is designed well, but the quality of the workmanship is a little suspect. Roughly half of the pilot holes for the screws are way off, most just barely catch wood. It seems to be on pieces that are also secured with a bolt and pin as well, so I'm not too worried, but I was expecting half the screws to miss the board it was meant to secure. There are several sets of symmetrical parts, left and right, which are identical in appearance and easy to confuse. Other parts of the frame are labeled, such as "seat" and "back". I had it assembled entirely before I noticed I had swapped two feet which ended up making the frame unusable. Even with the assembly instructions, it's not super clear which parts are left and which are right. Once it is all together, it seems pretty solid. A 8" Full sized futon mattress overhangs the frame about an inch on each side. The frame came in a very small but long package, and weighed about 45 lbs. All you need for assembly is a Phillips head screwdriver, but a drill will make the work much faster. All in all, it is a cheap futon that does the job, but there are definitely sturdier frames out there with similar design, and probably better manufacturing.

Simple, High-Quality, Sturdy, and Mobile; Fantastic Purchase!
I have owned this futon frame for 6 months and am absolutely in love with it. I am a student and it is the perfect size to fit under my lofted bed in my residence hall. It also rolls on my shag carpet very well when changing it from couch mode to bed mode. Other great qualities include: Lightweight Easy to assemble (if paying attention to instructions) Easy to disassemble (for moving out/summer storage) Easy to reassemble (some futon frames become weakened after disassembly. This one didn't appear to do so) Great support through mattress Fits back in box for storage if necessary. Suggestions: In case of discovering that one would prefer more support as to not be able to feel the bars through the futon mattress, one could staple or nail a large piece of cardboard to the seat and back portion of the frame to avoid needing to buy a new mattress. I admit, it's not ideal, but it's a cheap and easy alternative to at least try before dropping a large chunk of cash. With the cardboard in place, I do not feel any sign of the support bars beneath. The additional surface area distributes mine and the mattress' weight very well to avoid anything sinking between the support bars. As a previous owner of metal futon frames, I admit I was a bit skeptical of the wooden frame; I was afraid I would snap the support lats. As it turns out, the wooden frame bends even less than metal ones I have previously owned, and the wood also does not permanently bend like metal sometimes does. I rarely noticed feeling the bars through the mattress, however I think that is more of a mattress quality issue than a frame issue; the supports are a very appropriate distance apart and will not be felt with a decent mattress on top. I think the cardboard suggestion above is effective, cheap, and invisible during normal use. Overall, I am immensely pleased with this purchase. I have recommended this product to several of my friends who also loved my frame, and would certainly purchase it again if I had a chance to reconsider.
