The Mullard 12AX7 is a warm sounding tube, tames harshness. Low noise, and a smooth tone. Review: OUTSTANDING!!! - I purchased a Pro-Ject Tube Box S2 Phono Preamplifier and an Ortofon 2M Bronze cart a few weeks ago that took my McIntosh vinyl rig to a new level. Reviews stated replacing the stock tubes with the the Mullard Reissue 12AX7 Vacuum Tubes would provide even more sound improvement and the reviews were spot on!!! My McIntosh system with the Ortofon Bronze cart tended to be a little on the bright side, where I want something smoother and flatter. In bright systems cymbals, hi-hats, etc. have an artificial "sizzle" to them that is like fingernails on a chalk board to me. My test is always the beginning of The Beatles "Come Together" when Ringo plays the hi-hats in the right channel. They finally sound like hi-hats. Cymbals are supposed to have a very specific attack and decay to them and not sound like bacon frying. The Pro-Ject tube phono pre-amp stuck the dagger in that harshness and the Mullard tubes twisted it. I am truly amazed how good my system sounds now. So detailed, lifelike, incredible depth and wide soundstage. A highly recommended upgrade. Review: Good value - I needed 6 tubes for my Mesa Boogie amp so I bought a 4-pack in addition to this pair So far so good Low noise. No harmonic squealing

When you want dirt but not chime
I keep a lot of these around now. I think I have four of them new in box. The main reason is because they sound better driven than the JJ's. They also have balanced triodes so work great for circuits that use the 12ax7 as a phase inverter rather than a second preamp stage. But the main reason is the breakup is a more mellow affair and sooner than with the JJ's which sound amazing driven, but not like these. Ironically I like the JJ's better clean. They have more dynamics and definition. More chime. I only use low watt tube amplifiers so your mileage may vary.
