Woodturners learn how to cut and combine pieces of wood to produce multicolored geometric designs in turned bowls and vases in this highly illustrated book. Techniques are provided to achieve the accuracy required in segmented work, and professional tips reveal how to create preliminary blueprints. Step-by-step instructions and hundreds of color photographs explain how to accomplish the often-complicated tasks involved with sphere turning, building a porthole-style ring, and inserting diamonds and round designs. Review: Highly Detailed - Excellent Step-By Step Instructions - But not for beginners - I can't recommend this book highly enough. The author provides clear concise step by step instructions and photos describing the steps involved in designing and constructing many styles of segmented turning. It covers cutting and gluing segments into rings flattening and joining rings, detailed steps for making a couple different types of feature rings and various jigs and shop techniques. I successfully used the book to make salad bowls and a couple vessels for Christmas gifts. However, it requires close reading, rereading and studying the illustrations to completely grasp the clarity and specificity of the techniques described. (or maybe that's just me) It is silent on the actual turning tools and techniques and assumes the reader already has basic turning skills. This book is fine for a beginner as long as they don't expect it to tell them how to use a bowl gouge. Get "Ellsworth on Woodturning" for that. FWIW, I've found the actual turning to be the easiest and quickest part of the process. Review: The Art of Segmented Wood Turning: A Step-by-Step Guide - All-n-all this is a very good book, takes you thru the little details, and simple to make jigs to ensure that the turning comes out right. Plenty of great color photos to inspire you and step by step directions The one thing it lacked was a section on on the proper lathe chisel to use and why. But this book is on segmented turning, Not the basics of how to use a lathe. If you want to learn how to use a lathe, take a basic lathe class. Then buy this book. Then you won't just be making bowls anymore, but "works of art."

Packed full of great advice
Best book on segmented wood turning. The author really does this stuff and KNOWS his stuff! Excellent photos and descriptions. I am already a mid-level segmented turner and found lots of help in this book anyway. I should have read this when I was first starting as it would have saved a lot of slow learning the hard way. I hope it will keep me from additional slow learning!

For the advanced segmented turner
This is for the advanced segmented turner. But the beginner can get great tips on technique, tricks and short cuts. Covers stave construction, but wish it covered more on staves. Great book to have in your arsenal once you advance your skills.

want to learn segmented turning? get the book
This book is extremely well written and easy to understand with its great attention to detail. The photos and writings in this book are very detailed from beginning to end. Its truly like taking a course having an instructor explaining to you its that well written. Read the book, the guy is a natural born teacher. The book is printed on high quality sturdy pages. the photos are great. The book is so well detailed that every doubt or question i had was always answered within a page and a half. no questions were unanswered. He tells you how to turn with minimal tools and without complex formulas. If your just starting out get this book it could save you lots of money time and heartache. this book could be used by intermediate turners as well. This is the most detailed and best written instructional book i have ever read with exception of an html book.

One of the best books for segmented wood turning.
This is the most detailed and comprehensive book on segmented wood turning I have read, and I have read many. Tibbetts does a nice job of explaining everything, and in exacting detail. He includes many photos where he has painted the components in different colors in order to clarify their purpose. Toward the end of the book, he gets into some very advanced techniques. Maybe I'll get to that point some day. Maybe.

A must have buy. Simply the best!
This book exceeded my expectations. I have several books on this subject, all informative and each has its merits. A good deal of information is recycled in each book, but I found a lot of original ideas in this book. Indeed I found that it contained such a wealth of information, that it was necessary (for me at least), to pause and think over the detail every few pages, in order to better absorb what was being said. If I was limited to just one book on this subject, then this would be it!
