Hyperkin RetroN 5: HD Gaming Console for Game Boy Advance/ Game Boy Color/ Game Boy/ Super NES/ NES/ Super Famicom/ Famicom/ Genesis/ Mega Drive/ Sega Master System (Black)

I got this unit to play some retro games, but didn't want too much clutter of too many systems and cables and the occasional issue like the 72 pin NES connector. Although I've heard about this item having a tight cart fit on the NES slot, I also saw that this particular model should have fixed it. Thankfully, with YouTube reviews, I got all I needed to get started on this thing, was able to easily navigate all the options and set it up the way I wanted. I tried all 4 of the NES games I had and they not only all worked great, but looked bright and clear as well. NOTE: I've had some issues with this unit being able to read early revisions of NES carts that don't carry the Authorized Nintendo stamp, so be careful picking those carts up. The Hyperkin does a quick rip of the game ROM as opposed to playing it directly. This allows for cheats and translation patches to be applied. Apparently, it deletes the ROM after you remove the cartridge, perhaps to circumvent any issues with piracy. It optionally saves the game state anywhere you are in the game, regardless if there's a save checkpoint there or not, so that feature was really attractive to me. I gave the wireless controller a chance. It paired quickly and seemed to work fine, but the clicking drove me nuts, so I quickly plugged in the wired controller. I like that they thought to put rubber dust covers on all of the controller ports as well. I briefly misplaced one of the rubber covers and wondered if they sold these separately, but I found it later. I inserted a FAT32 formatted SD card for game saves, cheats and translation layers. If I had one more tiny gripe besides the controller, maybe having the SD card have a push in to lock spring-loaded mechanism instead of just push in and hope it's in all the way thing. That's about it. Overall, I think this unit is great so far. I love all of the added features it has, the dust covers, all of the different formats it supports.. I really have no idea what they were thinking of when they made the wireless controller, but it's somewhat usable in a pinch. Although this console isn't the heftiest of items, it was still better than the old third party SNES/NES unit I had. I just realized I also had another cheap unit that wasn't Hyperkin and that one was super cheap feeling. One last note: When inserting the cartridges, push in one side (left or right) first and then the other and it works better than straight pushing and removing, which I've always done before.

Having a HD tv my childhood systems show high detail of pixels. As a kid I never noticed this (maybe those 80's tv's smoothed the edges of our games by blurring everything) and only seen what the objects as they were meant to be seen. The retron 5 makes your games look like you remember them. The filters are great (I only use one) and forcing a refresh rate of 60hz the game play is smooth while my controller's response is 100% spot on (great I can use my snes controller to play nes games). So far all my games work (not the game genie for any system) and the controllers work as well (didn't use the retron 5 controller cause I don't care to). The only thing that would have made this the greatest system ever is if sega master system, Sega Game Gear, N64, Game cube and atari games played on it. I can only hope the next system will have this feature (which I will pre-order again). Now I'm not saying that the $200 + price tag is worth it (I lucked up an locked it in at $99 pre-order) but if you really are bummed about the next gen system's lack of games and you have a huge 8/16 bit collection then getting one of these is pretty much up there with eating. I have never owned a Hyperkin retro system, mostly because it only played 2 system games and the picture quality/reviews were not so great. I'm just really glad I bought this, haven't turned on the ps3, ps4, 360. or x-1 since I've got it. I haven't even played the wii u with games I've downloaded on it now that I can replay the carts with better graphics. To clear up something, Yes I've got a wii and can play game cube games, plus I can hook up any of my old systems to play those games as well but this system brings old games up to date. My n64 looks pretty bad on an HDTV and even though my snes looks pretty good, along with my nes, it is unbelievable what this system has done to cart style games. (UPDATE) didn't make it. JAN 10 2016 died. Will not turn on.

I have been playing video games for over 35 years and have had just about every system ever available so i played a few games in my time.I have to say the Sega Genesis was always my favorite but i did have a SNES and i loved to play import games from Japan so i modified both systems.It use to be the games would come out about 6 months early in Japan before they made it to the states.When i looked at the RetroN 5 i watched many You Tube videos first on good and what seemed to be more bad from games not working to having a very hard time getting the carts out of the system.Then there was how cheap it was made so the day i ordered it i decided to cancel but they said it was to late.So got it in a day and and finally opened it up and it looked really good nothing like i read.I will say right up front the controller is a waste go right to a sega or snes one from the start.Easy to hook up and it really is pretty cool how once you put a game in it loads it up and the game name come up at the top and you are ready to play.I changed the sound for more bass and treble and the size of the picture and found i filter i like.You must know the games do not look like anything you would see on a PS4 or Xbox One but there really is a much brighter and clear picture so the HD 720 really helps.I only had some problems when loading the NES games some worked some did not but i was ok with that but the Genesis & SNES i have no complaints.And if you place a hand on either side of the cart and pull one side up first it comes out so easy.I think it was the first style that had the to tight of a grip on the games this is great.I like going from game to game and how you can use a snes controller for a Genesis game this is a great option.I think they got it down now and they know what they are doing and i would have no problem telling a friend to buy one.I always liked Japanese Import games the Super Famicom & Sega Mega Drive so today i bought some Famicom games and that is a big feature about this system able to play all these systems.It is so nice you put the game in and it loads fast and you are ready to play.I did have one baseball game lock up no big deal and what is really nice is you can play a game and stop at a certain point in the game take the game out to play something else and the next time you play you have the option to pick up where you left off.I tried it on a HD 55" 1080p TV but i felt it just did not look right so i moved it to a HD 37" 720 and it looks perfect.It's fun again playing all of my favorite ones when i was growing up but most up all its super to see a much better picture.The one big thing i liked from the games back then was only a few buttons to play so simple not like today's games with 9 buttons on one controller and just to much to do.I did realize on how long it has been since i played and i SUCK and that i need to play more and i will.If you have doubts like i did for a long time trust me it has brought a smile to my face.

The product on the paper is great, and even with it's slight flaws (on a normal functional unit), it opts to be great. Why am I giving a 1-star rating? Well, simply put, because I received a faulty unit. I simply cannot give more, if it doesn't even fire up. If i receive a working unit later on and it's fun as it should be, I still cannot give full score honestly after the issues, but still higher than this. So, the console arrived today so I unboxed it and plugged the wires in, but it never started up when pressing POWER button. I have all wires plugged in, as well as the controller charging up (which blinks lights, and sometimes sets itself as controller #3) No, this is not the issue of me not knowing that it must be held down for long time. I tried holding POWER button down for two minutes, several times, nothing. Front panel lights and the way they work indicate, however, that something is not right with my unit: the led lights on the front panel blink and turn on rather randomly, and different way every time despite doing the same thing. POWER button is sometimes more, sometimes less bright blue, and always shuts off after holding it for 10 seconds, blinking very quickly afterwards, randomly. The other front panel lights indicating, which cart is inserted in the console, do light up by random. Mostly 4/5 of them are constantly on, and one is shut off randomly, despite if I have GB cart inserted, or if none at all. I get "no signal" from television, and Retron 5 POWER button doesn't turn on and remain blue after 10 seconds, as it normally should when started up. I have tested with two working televisions LG LW450N and Sony Bravia KDL-26P2520, and with original HDMI-cable, as well as one of my own cable which is tested to work with Blu-Ray player. I had a friend over minute ago, who received his unit earlier today. It had some minor problems with those slide-open covers on the top (that protect the cart ports) jamming when opened, but nothing like this (my unit, hadn't this problem, but I'd switch our problems with Retron 5 any day easily). He confirmed that this unit, indeed, does not work as it should (like his). I have now e-mailed Amazon whether it would be possible to opt to wait for a new batch of Retron 5's to receive a working replacement console, as after ordering the unit on January and then receiving faulty unit after long delays, it would feel really stupid just to take a refund, as I know this is rather capable console (if it works).

Really, this review is 4.5 stars. This console is a blast to use. I’ve got over 100 Genesis, NES, and SNES games on my shelf, and until now, I relied on emulation. But nothing beats the feeling of popping in a physical cartridge and jumping straight into gameplay. It’s nostalgic, satisfying, and just works. I usually avoid scanlines, but the implementation here is subtle enough that I forget it’s even on. The system includes all the modern quality-of-life features: save states, fast-forward, cheats, and even super easy ROM patching. That last one has me buying Famicom and Super Famicom games on eBay, currently I am patch titles like Legend of Zelda—it’s addictive. Sadly it's only one patch per game. It’s easy to use and genuinely fun, but it’s not without flaws. Reproduction cartridges are hit-or-miss. Most American releases like Moonwalker, Chrono Trigger, and Lufia II work fine. But translated imports like Clock Tower and Live A Live don’t boot—oddly, Back to the Future II and Bahamut Lagoon do. There is custom firmware that may fix all this, but I am just enjoying Deja Vu for the NES right now to care, and yes I added a patch to make it uncensored which I added a screenshot for. At $155, it’s a bit pricey. If you don’t care about save states, ROM patching, or support for Famicom, GBA, GBC, and GB, the Retron 3 HD might be a better value at around $60 less. But for my needs, this system is fantastic. Bonus: it comes with a SNES-style controller, which is a huge win—especially compared to the Retron’s default controller, which is laughably bad. * All screenshot has scanlines turned on.

I bought this product this August (Black Version) and they are indeed the newer revision models. Everything is a lot better compared to the original batch and they come pre-loaded with the latest firmware date. It still has some faults that were not corrected/probably won't be corrected - The controller that comes with it is garbage. You should only use your this controller to test out the system and/or as a last resort. - Built in latency. The Retron 5 uses emulation to play your games, so there will always be added latency. Not to mention your playing on a HDTV that most likely has a higher input latency then your old CRTV. The higher your TV response time is, the worst the case will be here. - No N64 support, Atari Jaguar etc. There are still quite a lot of cart based systems out there that I wish were supported. However, Hyperkin is bringing out a Game Gear adapter is the future that will be sold separately for the Retron 5. No price point was given at the time of this review. - It's a giant piece of plastic. Don't expect original XBox bulletproof hardware here. - Various titles are not compatible, the list is rather small but they are still there. You'll never have 100% compatibility through emulation. For the record all of my titles worked but this may be a issue for other people. - Genesis/SNES Deathgrip slots - While the revision made things a lot "looser" the Genesis slot still feels hard to pull in/out. I don't think Hyperkin is going to do any further revisions of the Retron 5 at this point. Those are all the negatives I can think of. If you can deal with the list of negatives then I think you'll be fine with your purchase. The system does It's job and is about as close as a replacement for all your older systems that you'll find on the market right now. If you want to play all your old cart based games on a HDTV for a relatively low price point this would be your best option right now. If you have more money the other option would be to buy XRGB3 or some sort of upscaler that will most likely cost you 3x-4+ the price of the RetroN 5.

Works absolutely great, the wired controller works great but I haven’t fully tested the wireless controller yet. I love this console! I played this and gave it a full test for several months before deciding I was willing to give up my original consoles. Nothing will ever beat the originals but with this one having an HDMI port and working so well, it saves a lot of space and much less wire clutter to have to deal with. I was going to keep all my original controllers but there’s not much use as SNES was always my favorite anyway and these controllers have the same exact feel! The only original controllers I decided to keep was my Sega Genesis ones. So happy with this console and have had zero issues and July will be a year of owning this. I’m tempted to buy another as a spare in case I need it in the years to come. Seems to be very well made and the graphics are a big improvement to the original consoles, crystal clear picture! I’ve had other retro consoles that are suppose to play all the old consoles but nothing compares to this Retron5! Good job Hyperkin, I’ve been a long time fan for years and the company seems to be improving every time there’s a release! Look forward to seeing what else is to come!

It’s been very interesting finally pulling the trigger and buying a retron 5 and seeing for myself the ups and downs of it. The ups are very promising, they add a lot of great options to a variety of old consoles, not just centralizing five (or eight, with the adapter) but upscaling to HD with scan lines and all that instead of feeding everything through an old VCR or AV switch or something. From my experience so far what it sets out to do it does pretty well. Sadly some poor design and cheap manufacturing still get in the way. The controller hasn’t bothered me yet (playing an RPG, if I were playing a platformer it might be different) but it took AGES to get it to pair with the controller. I had given up a long time ago and was using an SNES controller. What seems to have finally fixed it was leaving the controller plugged into a power supply for days on end, a second time. And no, you don’t actually need the controller, but it adds a lot of that convenience and additional feature access like a home button, shortcuts and wireless connectivity, so the controller should be better for sure. Or better yet you should be able to pair a better controller. Just put a USB port on the front for the love of God. I also had to turn off automatic save downloading because it got stuck in a cycle where it would begin but never finish and I couldn’t do anything in the console with the game plugged into it. That was easily fixed but maybe that setting shouldn’t be on by default anyway. I thought it was strange that you couldn’t have more than one game plugged in at a time. I mean with 5 cartridge slots and a UI you’d think you could switch from one game to another, right? But I don’t design hardware so I suspect it’s easier said than done and it’s a minor annoyance anyway. Maybe if the GBA port on the front had a dust cover like the cartridge ports do, I would feel better about it. Another annoyance is the abrasive UI sound effects which I had to turn off in the settings. Way too loud and way too irritating, they sound like goofy arcade sound effects you hear in a movie where they have the rights to show the game but not the audio. There must be 8 consoles out there that have gotten the UI sound effects right, they shouldn’t be a detriment to using the menu. Overall I am happy with it. Most of these issues are annoyances and not a reason to avoid buying altogether. It’s still a single console that can hold games from nearly every console of the 8 and 16 bit eras, with bonus ports for handhelds (although you may need to use the bonus adapter, which looks great and I hope to get it soon). I wish they added in N64 capabilities to really drive it all home, and maybe we can get that in the future, but N64 is notoriously hard to emulate and that’s before you consider the expansion pack so I’ll hang on to mine for now. I recommend it for anyone with an HDTV and their old consoles hooked up to it in a bottomless tangle of wires and surge protectors. It does the job, just not without some annoying quirks.

質感は安っぽいと言われますが軽いって感じです。特に素材が薄いとかと言う感じはしません。カートリッジスロットは互換機にありがちな堅め仕様で抜く時にギリギリ金属音がします。ちょっと怖い気もしますが互換機慣れしている方でしたらそんなに気にはならないかと・・・。互換性ですが、他のサイトでも書かれていますけどハードウェア互換ではなくソフトウェア互換です。再現もかなりのものでメガアダプタも問題なく使用できました。RetroN3の時にも思いましたが、やっぱりHyperkinは中国で生産するのですね。コントローラーはちょっと斜めに入り易くて設定等で勝手に横入力されるのでコロコロ設定が変わり何かと難がありますが、純正コントローラーが使用できるので特に問題はありませんでした。RetroN3の時もそうでしたが、サンソフト製のメガドライブカートリッジは形状違いの為セットできませんね。本体をちょっと削ると問題なく動くと思いますが今回の本体はちょっと高いので抵抗もあります。

It is perfect, the wireless controller froze for a couple days, I had to take it apart an disconnect the battery, reconnected it an then it worked fine, thr console itself is exactly what it says it is , best purchase I made in a while a must have for retro gamers

Entao amigos, o que você precisa entender sobre esse game, como pode ser visto nas plataforma de videos é um console que roda via software, nao compre pensando em perfeição, isso voce adiquire o console original. Comprei esse game com qual objetivo jogar de fato games, nos dias de hoje nao tenho mais tempo de encarar os RPGs de Snes e outros consoles de cara, entao a funçao de acelerar é competente, muitos podem dizer que se quero acelerar pra usar emulador e computador so que eu nao consigo jogar no PC. As demais funções como extrair o save do cartucho e retornar o save pro cartucho, save state, cheats e poder jogar consoles como gameboy e game gear em tela grande torna um game sensacional 8 consoles em 1 é muito bom pra quem nao tem espaço. Infelizmente everdrives nao funcionam por questao de pirataria, mas se pesquisar um pouco consegue instalar uma custom fw que abre um leque muito grande de possibilidades. Resumindo pra mim atendeu perfeitamente. Eu ia dar 4 estrelas porque parece que o item foi aberto ou era de mostruario, veio completinho mas parece de mostruario. Pensei em devolver mas nao deixei isso tirar o brilho do console. Se voce nao for um critico, nao se importar com detalhes tecnico quiser apenas jogar retro em 2x compre sem medo ainda acho que esse console vai valorizar muito pois pessoas como eu que querem ter a sensação pelo menos de um console de mesa com pouco tempo vao comprar. Recomendo!
