I wanted a shelf-stable bread for my pantry.
I got this as a new item for my pantry. I wanted a bread that could be shelf-stable for a long period of time and more or less instantly ready to go. I plan to keep this for camping trips and in my deep pantry for extended Uh-Ohs. There aren't many options for keeping bread long-term and most of them are awful. Try MRE bread some time. Try Bridgeford's "combat sandwiches" some time. Try MRE pizza some time. The only other option I'm aware of is pilot bread or hard tack. That's OK, but I like having teeth. So I tried one of the cans this weekend. The bread is moist and sweet with that funky molasses taste. If you weren't raised with it or never embraced it, it might be an acquired taste. I've enjoyed molasses forever, so no problem there. You will find it a bit peculiar opening a can to find a loaf of bread inside. Open both ends and push it out- it won't just "shake" out on its own. It is probably best to toast it some and add butter before you try it. If you're used to Eastern European cooking, you might find it distantly reminiscent of homemade gingerbread. It's more of a cake than a bread. I haven't tried the raisin version yet, but I will give it a try. My next step will be to let it sit for a year or so to see how it holds up. I figure it will be fine, but time will tell. I would definitely eat this again and I intend to add it into the rotation. If it doesn't hold up over time, I'll let you know.

Great product!
B&M has been able to maintain it standards over the years. This was a staple in my house many many years ago and I was sorry to see it leave the shelves of my market and many others, I suppose.. it’s everything brown bread should be - tasty with just the right texture and the ideal amount of moisture. It is something good to have on hand, but it also makes great sandwiches for afternoon tea or is a low fat substitute for breakfast pastries. It tastes very good whether or not you put a little butter on it or some other toppings such as bittersweetheart orange marmalade.

Good in a pinch and holds up well
I bought this almost a year ago and finally decided to try it today, though I was a bit hesitant, as it had a BB date of May 2026 (it is now August 2026). First of all, it was very difficult to get out of the can (even with both ends opened). It pretty much broke apart. Nonetheless I tried cutting a few of the bigger pieces into small bread-like slices and then spread them with a pouch of tuna salad. Not bad! There didn’t seem to be anything off or bad about the flavor. Although I would never call this “bread” — it’s much more like a gingerbread cake, both in flavor and texture. Very moist and quite sweet. If you’re not a huge molasses fan, be aware of that dominant flavor also. All in all, not bad! Great for emergencies and seems to hold up well, even well after the BB date. I like that the ingredients seem pretty harmless as well.

Unfortunately...bland
When I was young (many decades ago) my maternal grandmother made "Boston Brown Bread" from scratch, using soup cans for the loaves. Most with raisins, but since I was picky and didn't like raisins, she always made some without for me. I remember how full of flavor it was, especially with a thick layer of cold butter on top of a warm slice. Alas, as noted, this no-raisins version was bland. It didn't even have as much flavor as, say, a slice of pumpernickel. Just my USD .02.

Very sweet
I bought this out of curiosity after seeing a video about it. This bread is very sweet and has a muffin-like texture. Very good for breakfast or as a treat. It's moist and has good molasses flavor. I'm impressed with the estimated shelf-life with a "best by" date more than a year away. The product was also easy to remove from the can by opening both ends.

Where have you been all my life?
I’ve walked past this on store shelves for years thinking it would be gross. Bread in a can? How wrong I was. Now I have to stop myself from buying it because I’ll eat the whole can in one sitting. It’s really more like molasses cake. A little dry but add a little butter, cream cheese or jam and it’s perfect. Strong molasses flavor. Not too sweet. I wish it was less expensive.
