SunGrow 2 Pack Large 6 inch Cuttlefish Bones, Made with Real Cuttle Fish, Calcium Source for Parakeets, Turtles, Dog, Chicken, Pleco, Snails, and Shrimps

These are two (2) Large 6” Size Cuttle Bones. They arrived in a white plastic shipping bag, in their Mfgr’s package, which is a plastic shell form shaped to the cuttle bone and had a paper/cardboard back. PRO’s: • SIZE = 6” Six inches, many cuttle bones offered at local pet stores, and/or Walmart have somehow become such low quality that they are both flimsy and short, NOT these, these cuttle bones are the same size that cuttle bones generally ran in the past. • QUALITY = Meaning, these are Full Size (6” inch) Cuttle Bones, and they aren’t necessarily ‘thick’, they are NOT thin like I find many retail/pet store cuttle bones. Which is good as that means it will last longer, has more surface sharping area for the bird to use to wear down their beak, and has a significant enough quantity of calcium available as a supplement for Your bird. • NOT COMPRESSED: These Cuttle Bones are actual whole cuttle bones and NOT made of compressed powdered mineral/supplements in just the “shape” of a Cuttle Bone! Which means that Your bird actually gets the benefit of using a cuttle bone to wear down its beak, which logically, I do not believe is the case when using mineral/supplement “shaped” cuttle bones. • TASTE = What ever the ‘taste’, my Mum’s Cockatiel likes it, she’s been tearing it up, eating it since I put it in her cage. • PRICE = For the price I paid for the quantity of two (2) Cuttle bones at their size, I found them quite reasonable CON’s: • ATTACHMENT: Same stupid cheap metal attachment used with a million other cuttlebones that are thin, metal and they break if You attempt to remove the cuttle bone from where You 1st attached it. ALL BIRDS IN CAPTIVITY NEED CUTTLE BONES, period‼️ 1) To wear down their constantly growing beaks 2) Especially for ‘problem’ birds, if You have a bird that is an egg layer. As every egg they produce is a health risk to them, since it drains their bodies of calcium. Cuttle bones provide Your bird with a natural calcium source that You do not have to attempt it administer via powder in water, to hide in their water or food that might put Your bird off eating/consuming their food or water. 3) Cuttle bone pieces also help Your Bird to grind up and digest their seeds. The Long and Short of it is that Your bird literally NEEDS/MUST HAVE a cuttle bone in order to sharpen (or actually to wear down) their beaks, in order to avoid health problems and potential injury. If left without a cuttle bone and unable to wear down their constantly growing beaks, their beak will become over grown, and potentially grow back towards Your bird, which can lead to their in ability to pick up and consume food, or worse still, their beak could literally curl back and in bed itself into Your bird’s cheek, face, chest, which would then require trimming and removal by a Veterinarian. Preferably an Avian Veterinarian who is familiar with the handling and treating birds, as birds require special handling as they can literally have a heart attack and die from the stress of being handled. Sadly, I know the above for a fact, as My mother’s bird ended up with that exact issue (beak over growth) when she (my mum) ran out of cuttle bones and had difficulty find them during COVID. My mum’s (& my own) eyesight are poor. We’ve both had cataract surgery & due to medications & ongoing health issues my eyes are worsening+failing. Unfortunately, I did not spend time with my mum’s bird for several months, as it was hard for me to get around, and I was prepping with many Dr visits for an upcoming back surgery, Etc. When I did finally get a good look at her -I made a point to check her, as I was concerned that my mum (84yo) just wasn’t keeping up with her care. And that is when I found out my mum’s bird’s beak had grown back toward her face and was extremely long. And to me, it looked like she had to be having difficulty eating. (Talk about an immediate Guilt Trip!) So, the next day as soon as the Vet’s office was open, I immediately called the closest Avian Veterinarian, and booked an appointment for a beak, nail, and wing trim. $150 Later, I learned that her poor bird’s beak had grown back and literally injured her cheek (insert my being horrified and add another metric TON of guilt for not having noticed her situation sooner!), that needed surgical removal, an anti-inflammatory (2x’s daily) and antibiotics (1x daily), both were Thankfully liquid administered by syringe for 2 weeks. So Yup, once again, I had to be the one to handle her and administer her medicine *cringe*..I say “again”, as She had a cold a year ago when we were displaced due to a hurricane, and she needed liquid antibiotics for 2wks. Yeah, we both came out of that time a bit traumatized, only because we both didn’t enjoy the experience. However, on a good note, this last time, she took the medication a lot easier, recognizing that as soon as she did, I would immediately release her back to her cage. So, just Trust me, and buy the Cuttle Bones, and make sure that Your bird has the dang Cuttle Bones to use!! You’ll regret NOT buying them and having them available for Your bird a LOT more than, You will ever regret buying them and making them available for Your bird!

Purchased as a natural calcium source and very happy with the quality. The cuttlebone is a good size, feels sturdy, and is easy to break into smaller pieces if needed. Getting two in the pack makes this a great value, and they should last a while depending on use. Exactly what I was looking for and would purchase again.

Big, big problem. It was dirty & the instructions were to boil these cuddle fish bones for 10-15 minutes to Sterilize. I'm not going to boil these in my house because I don't want the dead fish bone smell. This is supposed to be a cuddle bone for my my delicate parrot. I'm not taking this type of risk with her life. I threw them into the trash. I wasn't going to risk my parrots health or my families health and safety by boiling a product that should have been sterilized before it left the manufacturer. I'm not taking health risks during a world wide pandemic for my bird and my family. This is the first time I purchased a Cuddle Bone that wasn't already sterilized.Ut didn't look safe because it wasn't.
