Lyman, Brass Smith Case Trim Xpress Case Trimmer

I make tons of 5.56 and 7.62 from LC cases for competition, and was using the Lee case length gauge method with the cutter and lock stud for the last 30 years. While perfect with the trimming, It can be very time consuming and makes the hands and finger sore from the lock stud swap out and slips. The the cases need deburred and chamfered. When I found this I ordered it immediately and was pleasantly surprised how well it work, and every easy to set up. Simply, after sizing my brass I took the first piece on the case length, cutter and lock stud method. Put in the right collect in the Lyman Case Trim Express, backed off the cutter head, put the sized brass in, and adjusted the cutter head to touch the neck. I got a consistent 1.754 cut on each case there after with no need to debur/chamfer, and trimmed 150 perfect cases in 20 minutes. I would have got done quicker if not putting calipers on first few dozen and playing with the adjustments. With the cutter and lock stud it would have taken about 90-120 minutes to do that many. Hence I reduce by reloading by many hours and produce way more reloads. My only concern is the Made in China. Just got this and seems to be constructed well so I am bit concerned if it is going to hold up for heavy use as do 1000s of cases over the course of the year.

This thing works great! Ignore the wee-little girls that can't hold on to the brass when trimming. Maybe if they put their purses down, it would be easier to hold on to the case. It took me probably 2 minutes to set up, another minute to get it adjusted to the trim length I wanted, and I was off to the races. I think I had 40 pieces of 6mm Creed trimmed in all of 5 min. It was pretty consistent as far as trim length. All of them ended up within .001-.002" of my desired length. Good enough! I should have bought one of these years ago!

It works like designed. It is accurate and does a fine job with the brass I have thrown at it, but it's not something I would use to process brass in bulk. If I have 20 pieces this is fine, but if I have a lot to do I will use another trimmer that attaches to my drill. This unit requires me to use my thumb to push the case in to ensure a uniform trim and after a couple dozen my thumb gets tired lol. The unit is super quiet compared to my drill setup so that is amazing. The fact that I can switch out and do multiple calibers is awesome too. I will work on something to use to hold the brass as I trim and if I can figure that out it might make it better. All in all its a solid unit, quiet, easily adjustable, and worth it if you have multiple calibers that you shoot on occasion.

What else can you say? It works. I load multiple chamberings, and this tool makes life much easier. What I like most about it is that you can make adjustments in one-thousandth of an inch. Easy to use and set up, with locations you can attach it to a bench if needed.

Was skeptical buying this after reading the low reviews, even more so since I purchased a used one from Amazon. Was going to send it back under prime return policy if it had the problems I was reading in the reviews. Glad everything is working as it should and I applied some Teflon tape to the threads of the mill cover as suggested in one review. This took the wiggle/slop out and made the case holder more stable and square when milling. Accuracy after this mod was spot on and the dial indicator worked well and held position over several hundred cases. These were brass that was cut down and formed into 300 Hamr’ specs and only needed slight trimming. Ease of use was the only Con I have as the mill cutter would grab the case as force was applied to overcome the spring washer and cause the case to spin. Wearing light mechanics gloves with rubber grips helps to control this kinetic force and save your fingers from the associated wear and tear. All in all it’s a nice trimmer with plenty of bushings to fit popular cartridges so you won’t need multiple tools, and it made fast, accurate, consistent trimming of brass when the tape modification is preformed.

I was using a manually operated case trimmer that I modified to be powered by an electric drill. The drill improved operation but still was slow and cumbersome to operate. I was looking for an easier way to do this and this trimmer works great. It trims accurately, is extremely quiet, and spreads cuttings in about a 3" x 1.5" area beneath the cutter head. Cases also require less deburring afterwards than with my old method. It's easy to hold without bolting it down. I'm not up to the 15 cases per minute rate and probably won't get there, but it makes case trimming fun.

I've been reloading for over 20 years now and trimming brass has always been my m ost hated aspect of reloading I've tried many different trimmers and hated them all. This one is very fast and effective. I was going for speed, not accuracy as much and it still trimmed all my brass to within a few thousandth very consistently. Cant recommend this trimmer enough. It's worth it.

***UPDATE*** After almost 3 years of use, and thousands of cases trimmed, I can say without a doubt this is the best case trimmer available in a price that wont hurt. I have had ZERO issues and the ability to dial in your adjustments is fantastic. Go ahead and get this - you won't regret it. Over the years I have had several different methods for trimming brass. Hand held, something you put in a drill, all-in-one devices, etc. This product is simple, effective, and includes micro adjustment capabilities. The 10 piece included collets for different brass is a plus. I would highly recommend.

Wer in seinem Leben schon öfter größere Mengen Hülsen von Hand getrimmt hat, kann sich sicherlich trefflich besseres vorstellen, womit man diese ausufernden Stunden füllen kann. Zumindest in meinem Fall trifft das zu. Dieses Gerät verspricht Erleichterung. Soviel vorweg: das gelingt teilweise gut. Bedauerlicherweise wurde mir ein amerikanisches Gerät geliefert. Das bedeutet zunächst einmal ein falscher Stecker am Kabel und zusätzlich eine englischsprachige Anleitung. Wer kein europäisches Kaltgerätesteckerkabel im eigenen Fundus übrig hat, steht erstmal dumm da. Es gibt eine europäische Variante von diesem Trimmer - mit dem richtigen Kabel. Es gibt sogar eine deutsche Anleitung. Bedauerlich, dass ich diesen Lapsus von Amazon selbst ausbügeln musste. Die Geräte sind ansonsten baugleich. Der ambitionierte Preis spiegelt sich nicht in der Qualität des Produktes wieder. Ist ja keine Raketenwissenschaft. In der höchsten Geschwindigkeit des Motors wird bei mir ein Pfeifen produziert, dass mich zunächst einen Tinnitus befürchten ließ. Lacknasen an den schwarzen Abdeckungen sind sogar für chinesische Verhältnisse (in China wird das Gerät gefertigt) schlecht. Das Gehäuse wird bemerkenswert warm, aber nie heiß. Einrichten und betreiben funktioniert gut. Ich habe 100 Stück .308 Win Hülsen getrimmt. Die Wiederholgenauigkeit schwankt um +/- 0.07. die Führung hat leichtes Spiel in der Achse. Dabei jammert der Motor zu keiner Zeit. Kraft ist genug vorhanden. Im Standbetrieb mit zwei Händen kann der Vorgang betriebssicher abgespult werden. Das Gerät „wandert“ nicht, wenn man es loslässt und verbreitet auch keine unangenehmen Vibrationen. Für meine Zwecke okay. Ich fühle die 200 Euro aber nicht. Dafür muss es zuverlässig über ein Schützenleben hinaus klaglos seinen Dienst versehen. 3,5 Sterne.
