Easy to change, works great on a 10 year old Ashfield kitchen faucet 5297YP, new part is black and old one was white, fits great
This is exactly what I needed for my kitchen faucet that is about 10 years old (Ashfield line), model 5297YP. The parts breakdown says the cartridge is #974-074, and this is definitely the correct replacement (even though this new part has an extra 0 at the end). Also note that the color has changed from all white to black with a white bottom (as shown). The issue I had was the handle to the faucet sometimes would slowly drop down and turn on the water (at least a trickle). So I needed a new cartridge to fix the "loose" handle problem. In the photo, the old cartridge is on the left, and new one on the right. Changing this was super easy. First, make sure the water is off. The toughest part is finding the right size allen wrench (hex wrench) to remove the handle, but that is fairly easy (just put the wrench in the small hole on the handle and unscrew the screw attaching the handle to the end of the cartridge). Once the handle was off, I unscrewed by hand a cosmetic cap (in the photo see upper left round part) which exposed the locking device (brass, shown in the photo on the far right). That is removed with a large pair of pliers (just grip it "head on" on the two flat surfaces and unscrew it using pliers or pair of vice grips). Once that locking device is unscrewed, you just pull out the old cartridge and put in the new. On mine I DID need to use a screwdriver to remove the old seal (now a light blue on the new part, was red on the original part, again, see photo bottom left for the old red gasket that I had to gently scrape out of the internal workings of the faucet). Assembly is just the reverse - pop in the new cartridge (has two nipples that force the correct alignment), screw in the brass locking mechanism and tighten it (not too tight or you can damage the cartridge), screw on the outer cosmetic piece by hand, put the handle back on, use the hex wrench to tighten down the screw that holds the handle onto the cartridge, and you are done! In summary, I'm very happy! Thanks for reading :-)

Good cartridge, don't be like me.
I'm an avid diy'er, and this is my first time ever replacing this style cartridge in a kitchen sink. I'm embarrassed to admit the mistakes I made, but I'm hoping this will help someone. What not to do. 1. Turn off hot and cold water supply. Turn on faucet to purge lines, and make sure water really is off. 2. Loosen set screw, remove handle. (Removal of set screw not necessary) 3. Remove silver dome thing. 4. Remove brass retaining ring thing. 5. Remove old cartridge. 6. Where old cartridge was, it's filled halfway with water. Ahh, you'll be fine! Brass ring will push cartridge down. Stick old cartridge in, reinstall retaining rings, put handle on and test water. Works perfect, job well done, pat self on back. Turn off water. Wait 5 seconds.......Water spraying everywhere from handle, mess ensues on top of, and in cabinet under faucet. Defective part??? It is plastic after all! What the heck happened? Ok, here's where I went wrong. - After removing your old cartridge, soak up the residual water that's in the hole with paper towels or something. - Next, make sure the gasket from your old cartridge didn't stick to the faucet body, like mine did. Remove old gasket from where the bottom of the new cartridge will sit. My old gasket was clear, not blue. - Next step. Think, should I install this with the gasket dry? Proceed to call pfister, who says to use plumbers putty.. Yeah, no. Proceed to read amazon reviews and questions/answers, I see people mentioning lube. I have napa sil-glyde in the garage, hmm.. Ah! I have a tiny little container of oatey silicone grease. I don't know if it's necessary, but I honestly can't see it hurting the gasket, or me. I put some of that on the gasket, and the mating surface, which I normally wouldn't do, but that silicone stuff was like water, nothing like napa sil-glyde. -While lubing cartridge gasket, note the two plastic alignment pins, and their home in the faucet body. Install cartridge, wiggle it right and left until you feel those pins lock into place. Install brass ring, silver ring, handle, test, and everything is good now. By the way, one of the things I'm asked to rate with stars above is "stretch", what the heck is that? I gave zero stars because I don't know what the heck that means.

The right one
The delivery was delayed, but arrived in a reasonable time, and seller reported the delay and updated the delivery time accurately. Only one type of cartridge works for our faucet, and this was it. I don't know how scarce it is, but, I was able to determine this was the right one for our Pfiser faucet without much difficulty on Amazon. Even including tax, the price was less than half what it would cost from the nearest (10+miles) plumbing supply store that carried it. The installation process was made simple by viewing YouTube videos that described it in detail. The only issues were removing the handle (it was stuck and needed to be pried off) and replacing the set-screw for the handle (pretty difficult because of its location), but these have nothing to do with the cartridge, which fit easily and does not leak.
