I read another review on this product before buying. I was told that it worked not only on the original Xbox, but that it also worked on the 360. It worked the first time I plugged it into my 360 no disc is required. One tip don't leave it constantly plugged in as I did have a problem with it freezing after having left it plugged in for about a month. So remember to unplug this Item while not in use. Even after the freezing problem I left it alone for a couple days and it works just as well as the day I first used it. The biggest selling point is how much cheaper this item is compared to the Xbox 360 wireless adapter. Update: 01-15-2011 This adapter does not work with all modems. Our old Quest modem worked well with this adapter and my family was able to watch Netflix and play on Xbox live, but when that modem died and we replaced it we were unable to get this adapter to work with the new modem. I have 2 Xbox 360s and I have the adapter that was built for the 360 as well. The Xbox 360 adapter works well with the new modem no problems whatsoever. I would not go with this option anymore unless you have an older modem and I cannot guarantee it will work for you. The original Xbox adapter itself still works fine, just will not connect to our new modem.

This is a truly excellent product for the Xbox. It was originally designed for the first Xbox console, but it works flawlessly with the current generation XBox 360. This product basically works like an ethernet bridge. Once you have set it up, it should work with any device that has an ethernet adapter. You will need to connect it to your XBox 360 at first. Once it has established a connection with your access point, you can then move it to any ethernet-enabled device and it should work. I could not decide whether to locate my wireless router close to my XBox 360, or close to my desktop computer. I needed an adapter that would work for either one. In the end, I ended up moving the router closer to the computer, away from the XB360. The XB360 is the one using this wireless adapter. The computer is connected directly to the router. But, I could have gone with the opposite set up. It has been working fine for me. I use the console every day, downloading content from XBox Marketplace. And so far, this adapter has maintained reliable connectivity. Transfer rate is more than satisfactory, as the real bottleneck is the internet connection and not the home network. I also like the fact that this adapter has its own power supply and does not depend on the console's USB port for power. Microsoft very rarely puts out a product that does not require some type of correction throughout its life cycle. Heck, they are still patching up Windows Xp seven years later! The XBox 360 console itself is still haunted by frequent hardware failures, even three years after its debut. But Microsoft got this one right. This is one microsoft product that works like it should. You will not need to install the included software if you are going to use it on a 360. Should you buy this adapter, or the one specifically designed for the XB360? This one is about $30 cheaper. But it does have a separate chassis, and does require its own power supply. Whereas the XB360-specific adapter is a small, USB device that snaps and locks onto the back of the console. In other words, the more expensive device is a neater solution, especially if you have a white XB360. All you will see from the front is a small antenna. And the USB adapter will turn off when the console is off. This one will continue to run until you unplug its independent power supply. The adapter is black in color and does not match the white color of the Arcade and the Pro consoles. On the other hand, if you have an Elite console, the black box that is this adapter does not look bad at all. Performance should be roughly same. They are both capable of 802.11G operation. This is a better deal than the USB adapter. And it is also more versatile because it can work with other ethernet devices. Highly recommended.

I purchased the Xbox wireless receiver about a month ago because I wanted to get some of the free downloadable content I'd heard about. I did my research, considered hacking a cheap wireless router and the Xbox 360 receiver, but decided on this because of the price and the fact that I can use it on my still occasionally used Xbox. As with all products over $x I chose the "free" super saver shipping, so I didn't expect it to be at my door too soon, and it wasn't. Out of the box it is just what you'd expect, a small black box with and antenna, some cords and a CD. Heading the advise of others I just plugged the receiver in and started up the 360. Going into network setting was rather hard, as with all Microsoft products, and once I did find the network connect I found out the receiver does not support WPA security, only WEP. I am a Mac user, I use an Airport Extreme running WPA, and were it not for my little brothers Nintendo DS I wouldn't have had a router to connect to. I will reiterate this, THIS PRODUCT DOES NOT SUPPORT WPA ENCRYPTION!!! DO NOT buy this if you only have WPA. Once I did get online, the one month free Xbox live thing was nice by the way, I was disappointed by the lack of content, I had been expecting it to spend all night and part of a day downloading updates, but it didn't. Furthermore, when I went onto Halo 3 expecting to get my butt kicked and smack talked, all I got was a butt kicking. There were no 12 year olds demanding chocolate milk or people singing "Video Killed the Radio Star." Bottom Line is, if you want something to go with your open, unlocked LINKSYS router that will just get you online this is perfect, if you have it WEP protected you're golden too, but if you have WPA, just spend the extra $50 and get the 360 version, it will save you a LOT of hassle.

What a waste. Would not work with our gateway network. After many attempts (including trying to contact Microsoft and Xbox for info/assistance) we gave up in frustration and bought the higher priced newer adapter. The new one works fine but this one would have required that we reconfigure our home network in order to use. The error messages informed us that we could find the info online but could not locate (and I am a student in knowledge management!). We also sent it back to Microsoft stating that it was unusable and they just sent it right back without any explanation. Poor product and poor service.

This stupid thing was my only way to get wireless connection on my xbox 360 in the beginning. It was a hack to install and eventually it became unusable but damn microsoft for not building in WIFI.
