You would use Aluminium for the thermite. As for the ratio, use stoichiometry to determine the actual ratio. If you can't do that you probably shouldn't be trying to make explosive thermite.

NIX! This stuff is a LAB CHEMICAL, not a health supplement. Look it up! Copper is quite toxic to the body. Back ally medicine is not very wise. Do your homework.

can i use this as a pigment for clay?

Mikey, Although I have no direct knowledge of this application, I am sure that copper oxide would color clay; however, there are other oxides, like black iron oxide, Fe3O4 that are somewhat less expensive. Both of the oxides will be stable in the wet environment associated with clay. Also, any paint color is stable in water and is specifically designed for this application i.e. coloring. If you are going to fire the clay after forming, there may be chemical changes that would result in a totally new color.

Reduced with zinc - success! but...

Used in CuO + Zn (powder) thermite reaction. Worked, but I haven't checked the yield. If the yield is good, I will order more. Added 3 M HCl to dissolve the zinc oxide. It looked good initially. It looked like little copper grains were left. But after 5 days, the copper dissolved, too. I now have a blue-green solution. I'm not sure what happened there.
