Rick Steves' The Holy Land: Israelis and Palestinians Today is Rick's newest public television special โ filmed on location in 2013. In Israel, he travels from the venerable ramparts of Jerusalem to the vibrant modern skyline of Tel Aviv. In Palestine, he harvests olives near Hebron, visits a home in Bethlehem, and pops into a university in Ramallah. Weaving together narratives from both sides, Rick also learns about security walls, disputed settlements, and the persistent challenges facing the region. Why the Holy Land? According to Rick, ยI wanted to produce a television show that could help my American viewers better understand this troubled land. My agenda was simply to be balanced and honest. Not with the cold detachment of a news reporter, but with the natural empathy that comes from being a travel writer. I wanted to take on a ยdual narrative' approach: giving voice to reasonable and rational people from both sides of the thorny issues.โBonus Features: This DVD also includes a 15-minute Q&A interview with Rick Steves, plus 10 extended interviews with people who appear in the TV special. Review: A Must See - Rick Steves lays a thought provoking presentation for the current turmoil between lsrael and Palestine. While this was not his intent at its outset, it provides information that many of us have not acquired leaving the viewer with an understanding of the history between these 2 nations. I highly recommend. Review: Great addition to my library - I'm glad I watched this before the outbreak of catastrophic events occurring presently.

Can't go in person? This armchair tour is almost as good ! Highly recommended !!
Almost as good a going there (we did) this perceptive tour of the Holy Land and its many cross-currents provides a wonderful armchair look at the complex relationships and historic conflicts that have brought us to the Holy Land today. For anyone trying to understand Israel, Palestine, and the conflicts in the Middle East, this is time well spent !!

A worthwhile effort
Well worth watching in spite of the fact that Steves clearly bends over backwards to softpedal the Israeli mistreatment of Palestinians. The only political comments in the video come from the people being interviewed and not from Steves himself.

Invaluable Resource
The suggestions for restaurants and B&Bs were superb; e.g., without the book in hand, we never would have come upon The Little Skillet in Kinsale. We spent a delightful evening in this charming restaurant that seats fewer than 20. The entire side trip to the little towns of Kinsale and Cobh was unplanned and quite memorable and suggested by the book. This was my first trip to Ireland and my husband's sixth. He was pleasantly surprised to be seeing and doing things he hadn't before. The many easy-to-read maps were useful. We happily handed over the book to a young couple from California we met in the Temple Bar in Dublin the final night of our trip.

This book is great!!!
I just got back from my first international trip to Ireland and this book was our bible. Ever place we stayed and most places we ate were recommended in the book and the reviews were right on. My fiance has traveled all over europe with other travel books and she is not hooked on rick steves. A nice feature is it labels restaurants and places to stay by price range so you can pick a place to fit your budget. Another nice feature is it gives the history of a lot of attractions so you can read about the place as you visit it. I recommend this book to anyone.

Travel from your couch
My dad has always wanted to travel to Israel, but he suffers from dementia which would make traveling to difficult. This allows him to see all the sights in the comfort of his living room!

I actually watched it on PBS and enjoyed it. Then I decided to buy it for watching with my study group which will resume in the fall.
