Volkman Seed Featherglow Large Parrot 4lb

Good substitute when you can't leave fresh food

Volkman is well-known for its parrot products, and since I've switched to buying all my bird products (except for their basic diet of fresh fruits and veg) on line, I bought a bag of Volkman Seed Featherglow Large Parrot. I use seed only once every couple of weeks, and only 1 Tbsp at a time for each bird, as a treat, so I've had this same bag for a while now, and it's still fresh and bug-free. I guess I didn't notice that there were peanuts in this mix before I bought it, and I don't give my birds peanuts, so I had to pick them all out. I only use sunflower seeds for training, maybe 20 per week, so I couldn't just take a scoop of seeds for their treats, without stopping to pick out the sunflower seeds from it. So one day, I sat down and separated out all the sunflower seeds. What was left was only maybe 2/3 of what I started with. So if you don't regularly feed sunflower seeds, this becomes a very expensive seed mix. Of course, this is just what I do with my personal birds, and if you feed your birds peanuts and sunflower seeds, then Volkman Featherglow is a good choice for you!

Now that the pet stores have almost completely switched to pellets I had to find real food my bird will eat! No way he'd ever eat pellets since he throws them and would rather starve. After trying many mixes, because he hates dried fruit too, he has decided this is the one. We have been using it for a year now. It has a nice blend of all the seeds and some nuts and no pellets!

I've ordered this before and was happy with the quality and the variety. When I opened my most recent order, the food smelled stale and old. There were also a lot more sunflower seeds in the mix, but didn't matter because I'm not feeding it. It smell is not good. I won't be buying this again.

I have a Red & Green Macaw large. Have used multiple brands of feed through many sites. Volkman's Featherglow is a wonderful option for large birds. Every bag I have ordered has been fresh, no dust, no shake. Clean seeds, healthy mix of appropriate feed in here. I add this to a large container that I fill with nuts, dried fruit, dried beans and supplements, and pellets. This is a smart base. You will always fair well with Volkman's. Amazon currently offers the most affordable price.

Bag was fresh but filled with tons of sunflower and mostly safflower seeds,very few nuts or large pieces for macaws. I think I counted 3 almonds and maybe 8 peanuts total in this bag.this would be appropriate for my Quaker parakeets not my hyacinth! lesson learned,I won't purchase this again.
