Used by pros
It is important to know what Radon is and how it works. I do Radon tests for real estate sales. The realtors want it now so we do short term tests (48 to 72 hours) . These long term tests are 91 to 365 days. I use Accustar because in my opinion they are the best. A full year will give you a better picture of Radon in your house. If you are concerned and want to know now get a professional to do a short term with a continuous read monitor. These monitors cost from $1000 to $5000 each so it is not a do it yourself deal. This will give you short term results and if they are above the EPA action level of 4.0 you can either have an abatement done or start a long term test. For more complete information go to the EPA's web site and search Radon. There is a lot of good info there. Also the EPA recommends that you test your house yearly and every other year if a system is in place. I hope this helps.

NRPP certified (professional grade), but beware of stale kits
I have been using Accustar alpha track devices for 365-day tests since 2018, co-located with an Airthings Wave radon monitor since 2019. Some strong points: The Accustar alpha track is an NRPP approved device and Accustar Labs is an NRPP approved analysis provider, meaning third-party industry experts are providing oversight, verification and audits of quality assurance and quality control systems. I'm also happy to see agreement between my Accustar reports and those from my Airthings Wave device. A not-so-strong point: I have seen Accustar's logging-analysis-reporting processing times run anywhere from 4 days to 39 days, with a median of 17 days. A worrisome point: Accustar's shelf-life policy changed drastically in late 2022. Formerly, an alpha track long-term test had to be started within three years of the device's manufacture date. Today, the long-term test must be complete and the alpha track device returned to Accustar's lab for analysis within 18 months of the manufacture date. A pair of devices that Accustar shipped to me this July (not through Amazon) were only 363 days from expiration on the day they were delivered. Now, consider that these devices are often bought a couple weeks in advance of their regular annual replacement date. Subtract 5 more days for mailing devices to the lab in Massachusetts and 17 more days for the lab to log the devices and begin analysis. After those deductions what we actually have is a device that can monitor radon for only 327 days at most. Residential radon levels tend to vary with the seasons, so not being able to monitor for a full year is both bogus and sad. Buyers would be well-advised to check their Accustar device's expiration date immediately upon receipt. Unless that expiration date is at least several weeks more distant than the long-term test's scheduled end date, the device should be returned in exchange for a fresher product.

Warning! Perhaps Not A Legitimate Company
I ordered two of the "top hat" radon long term measuring devices. I placed them for six months and then mailed them in for analysis. After three weeks I called AccuStar at the number included with the devices. The person answering sounded like a wrong #, "Hello, Yea." I hesitated and asked if they were Accustar. "Yea, but I gotta know the reason for your call to forward it." I eventually reached someone. She told me that it would take three months for them to report the results. Not because it took that long for them to analyze, but because they are short on equipment to do the analysis. Seriously? Do I want to trust these people with important health test results for my home? I told her how disappointed I was and she said there is nothing she can do about it. Scam? I don't know. But for sure a waste of time and money.

So far, so good...
Can't tell you what the test results look like since I'm only 3 weeks into a 90 day test. But my initial impression is favorable, received the kit promptly, and the instructions were specific and clear. I went with this particular kit because it is #1 rated by leading consumer magazine and was also specifically recommended by a home inspector I met who performs 500 real estate home inspections per year. I wanted to hire him to use his 48 hour digital test equipment in my home and he advised that my money would be better spent on this 90 day kit since I am not under time constraints for the results. He also suggested that I place one device in the basement rec room where we spend a fair amount of time, and the other device in the first floor master bedroom (ranch home with basement). Those 2 locations are on opposite ends of the house as well. I'll try to remember to update this review after the conclusion of the test period.

Easy process!
I got the 2 pack when I bought a new/old house. My intention was to do a 6 month test on 2 areas of my basement. Iโd previously done a 3-day test from a different manufacturer that showed slightly elevated levels that would indicate radon mitigation and it recommended a long term test. Accustar had the best reviews. I kinda forgot about the little pucks and ended up doing a 267 day test. It only took 8 days from the date they received the sample to emailing the report. I donโt need radon mitigation at this time and this test was a cheap way to find out.
