Aron, The "better sanding strips" can be used with water, but first and most important is what are you needing to do to use water on, and very important is applying water to the strip. I use water for fine polishing and quick cutting. I started using water for an abrasive conditioner in my work, and I actually was "electricuted, lightly" from me applying water on the strip improperly. Use a fine spray to keep the "amount of need water" flowing. Do not spray anywhere else for safety reasions.Hope this helps,Robertw

Is 400 grit intended to smooth polish or to remove stock? What grit # is recommended to smooth polish soft & hard wood, 600 grit, 1,000 grit? Thanks!

they do make a leather belt for sharping knifes  or go with a 400 to 600 grit belt sanding  // note i use my sander for  wood work  //  hope my answer will help

I guess it will all depend on what you are trying to do.  What kind of stock and how much shaping is needed vs. how rough are you willing to accept.  But let me take a shot at this anyway.  The lower the number (in this case, 100 or less) will take more off. This is belt is 400 grade, so it is almost to the level of polishing.  Now this assumes wood, I plan to use this to reset edges on whittling knives.  (I finish with 1000 to 2000 for a polish and then a leather stropping belt to finish the polish.)  So one man's rough is another man's polish...  Anyway, this is a one inch belt, so if you are looking to really shape some wood with a sander you may want to look at a 3" belt sander.  There are some really good belt AND disk sanders (I use one of these too) that do an outstanding job at shaping. Last thing, just a suggestion based on your question, try a sample pack.  Get a set of belts that range from around 80 to 220 or higher.  Then see what works best for what YOU want to do.  After all, 10 belts that are WAY TO FINE would be a waste.  On the other hand if your stock is like balsa wood, this would actually be perfect.  FYI, at this level of grit you can even do work on light plastic.  So again, what you are working on and just how you want it removed (fast/rough) will effect what is "best".
