Video skips over how to align pencil mark on the horizontal piece at1:45 mark? How is it done accurately since there is no line on jig on that side?

They do skip over it, as they do in the manual. They also skip over the centerline on the joining pieces, in the manual. However, behind each drill guide, on the carrier, there is a centerline for each hole, including the center hole. In the position where the carrier mounts to the mounting/fence indexing plate, there is a 1/4” hole behind the center drill guide. You can use this to view your centerline and line it up with the centerline on the carrier. With the fence all the way forward you can still see down into the 1/4” hole to line up your center lines.

Is this similar to setting up a dowel-maxx jig?

I’m sure there are some similarities but I’m inclined to say no. the Dowelmax is self-centering and jessEm is always on a reference face. I have and love the jessEm, if I had one complaint it would be when drilling into pieces that are less than 2” wide (think table legs to attach aprons). The board isn’t thick enough to line up with the centerline on the jig.
