Question 1

How big are the plates? I wanted to use my daughter's hand print to show the importance of washing hands.

Hi Rebecca, this is a great idea for an experiment and one that is included in our ebook.  Our science kit plates are about 10cm in diameter, so it is probably a little too small for your daughter to put her entire hand on the prepoured agar plate.  What we recommend for this experiment is to either put part of her hand on the plates before and after washing her hands or to use the cotton tipped applicators to swab bacteria off her hands and wipe them on the plates before and after hand washing.  Our science kit also has a bottle of hand sanitizer so you can compare hand washing in a sink versus sanitzer.

Are the results easy to see or do you need a microscope?

The results are very easy to see. I'm sure a microscope would be fun for a closer look at what you are growing, but it is easy to see the differences between various experimental conditions.

After you have used all of the swabs can you  use normal swabs

Hi Jon, Thank you this is a great question.  Normal swabs are not ideal because they are not sterile, so they may already have a small amount of bacteria of other microorganisms already growing on them.  If you run out of the swabs included in the kit, email us and we'd be happy to send you another set of 10 free of charge.

how long does the kit last for? I am buying an early present and it will sit in a closet for a while.

Hi there and thanks for your question!  We recommending refrigerating the plates on arrival.  They will probably last several months at room temperature, but they will last much much longer when refrigerating.  Other agar plates on Amazon only have a shelf life of 30 days.
