This DOES FIT 2004 Ford Explorer
I purchased this for my 2004 Ford Explorer and it works perfectly. I originally purchased the Amazon recommended FC-974 and it was nowhere close to fitting! I read information that for what ever reason Ford used a few different styles of fill-neck and cap combinations. I had to go to the Ford website and using my VIN# it gave me the correct part number for this cap. Amazon needs to refine their search engine a little and consumers, including myself, need to research a little better. I can also recommend to sellers to provide better pictures and information to potential buyers. Showing just the top of the fuel cap doesn’t provide any useful information at all!

FITS 2005 FORD EXPLORER XLS
This review is for the "Motorcraft FC-1058 Fuel Tank Cap " purchased in January 2022. Checking on the Ford website for compatible gas tank caps returned three results. One was a locking gas cap and the other two were standard. The FC-1058 was one of the standard options. I saw all three for sale between Amazon and Ebay. I can confirm the FC-1058 part fits properly on a February 2005 Ford Explorer XLS. The part I received was in new, unopened, OEM packaging (plastic bag with Ford branding).

Great Replacement
The tether on the gas cap on our Ford Explorer eventually broke, so our cap ended up being left at the gas station. I wanted to replace it with one with a tether so it didn't happen again and this one worked perfectly. I definitely recommend.
