can you use a spreader (like you use to spread grass seed) instead of a spoon? Does the spore need to be clumped or just spread evenly?

Accepted Answer

The best applicator is a 5-6 foot piece of 3/4" PVC pipe with a small metal can that has a removable lid (think: small metal coffee can) taped with the bottom of the can about 3-4" from the end.  Poke some small holes in the bottom of the can (approx 10-12) with an awl or ice pick, fill it with powder, and attach the lid.  As you walk along, thunk the end of the pipe on the ground about every 3-4 feet.  Take a look at your "piles" of powder after the first few to determine if your holes are big enough, or numerous enough, and the "thunking force" is adequate to drop about a teaspoon of powder each time.  Apply in a 3 or 4 foot separation grid pattern on all the turf you want to (or can) cover.This contraption will last as long as you need it to.  It is much more effective to apply during dry conditions, *before* a light rain is expected.  If the grass is wet and long, the moisture will eventually clog the holes in the bottom of your can.

Question 2

When I opened the M.S. box , I found plastic packaging that was "inside out" and labeled "Perennial Fertilzer". Is that normal packaging?

Yes, rec'd my order today.  In the manufacturer's box is a white plastic bag that says "recycled bag". It confused me because other than that there was no indication it was indeed Milky Spore Powder", in fact to add to doubt the white bag was inside out and I could read that it was a bag originally of Rose Fertilizer.  My neighbor's MSP purchased years ago was packaged in a clearly labeled canister inside the mfg's box.  I made a call to the seller and a call to the mfg, St Gabriel Organics, both confirmed the product was correct. While I applaud their emphasis on recycling, it would have been nice to have my white bag ID'd, it wasn't.

Question 3

Has anyone actually tested this with some grubs in a jar or container?

Accepted Answer

No, not with grubs in a jar, that would be highly concentrated, 1,000's of times. I put it on my lawn last Spring and have noticed a significant drop in my lawn getting dug up by skunks looking for grubs.

Question 4

If I've already used a granular Grub killing product can I still add Milky Spore?

Accepted Answer

No you do NOT want to use a grub killer, as you want the grub larvae to ingest it and become infected, and spread the bacteria.  If you kill the grubs, you will not get any benefit out of the milky spore bacteria.  This is per manufacturer instructions.  If you have already used the grub killer, you may want to wait a year or two to apply the milky spore, after the grubs have returned.
