Do not buy for UK. Does not work without reprogramming.
I bought this knowing full well it wouldn't work in the UK, which it doesn't.. Well it does, it picks up X, K & KA bands very well but we're talking traffic lights, automatic doors etc.. And the GPS database for speed cameras and red light cameras obviously doesn't work because it's loaded with the USA database. You can, however, visit and register to join RDforum and receive the correct update files and UK gps database from there for a small fee. All very easy to do. Its now perfect!

Picks up gatso camera from quite a distance.
Seems to work on gatso cameras. That's the fixed camera at side of the road. And does not go off if there's no camera in the gatso. Not had chance to test on a mobile speed camera van. I'd say watch videos on you tube.

Useless in Uk
Picks up everything except speed cameras. Fixed, or in vans, neither result in a response from the device. Yet to be tested on hand held guns but I am not expecting much. In addition to its uselessness, the mute button on the cigarette plug (which is used a lot) has a habit of sticking which upsets the unit and indicates to me it is not great quality. I expected more from this product given its price. And would advise not to buy.

Gold standard entry level radar detector.
It works fantastic & it's the real deal. Best value for cheap. Picks them up far enough away that you have plenty of time to react. Will great right out of the box but does require some fidgeting with the settings to not get false postives. That's very normal though for detectors but I assume whoever is buying this is new to that kind of stuff. You can find settings online but ultimately you do kind of have to dial it in to your area and what detectors are in your area. Sounds complicated but it's really not, you'll figure out very quickly what signals they use around you and what signals are getting picked up from other stuff. This is entry level to be clear. This is for having a little fun letting loose for a bit or just normal driving being aware of where they are ahead of time so if your a little over you know to slow down ahead of time. Also just for people new to this, they don't always have radar on so don't think this is just a I'm invincible device you still have to be smart. That's relevant for all detectors. If your up to crazy stuff, just spend the extra money and get an higher model one. The extra features and little bit higher capability is worth your freedom lol. Stay safe out there.

I like it a lot!!! See mounting photos below: has worked out great....
I have only had this unit a short amount of time. Coming from 3 Valentine One detectors, I view this as a huge improvement and truly enjoy the features that make traveling more relaxing. The "MARK" idea is brilliant and coupled w/the GPS, I can now ignore those warnings. HOWEVER, I have turned-on the "VOICE" and have found that it is invaluable when used with the "MARK" feature: it warns you verbally that you set a MARK for this particular area and that radar may indeed be present. Genius!!!!! Set on "CITY" mode, I get much fewer alerts around town, esp. compared to the old Valentine ONE. Also, it is relatively small, as you can see from the attached pics. The small suction cup mount is holding up very well!!! Mounting the unit at the top of my windshield also provides me with increased warning distance. There are other features that I have not had the time to discover, but will do so.... Another thing, the printed manual is a real bonus, to say the least. It's in the Porsche Panamera S so I can refer to it at any time. Kudos to Uniden for doing this vs. only having the option to download it from the internet. Mounting it was not complicated: the suction cups went almost underneath the liner, stayed fast and allowed the clip to work normally. Next, because it did not position itself horizontally, like the Valentine ONE, I used very, very thin copper wire to attache it to the visor clip, using a tiny picture hanging hook. I used super glue for holding the clip to the unit (I tried Gorilla Glue, the original glue and that failed. With the super glue, it bonded instantly.) Another feature that I like is the beep & voice at start-up that labels K, Ka, Laser modes. Perfect. It IS a really sophisticated detector, to say the least. When I have to rotate the visor downward I know that it blocks the detector's rearward warning antenna, so I keep it up in its normal position 99% of the time. No worries. I highly recommend this unit and feel that I made a great purchase here on Amazon.

Best in the market
After reading reviews and watching videos of trusted reviewers i decided to upgrade one of my older radar detectors mainly because of all the false alarms. My previous detector was GPS enabled and could lock-out known fixed false signals but couldn't do anything with the false signals caused by newer vehicles with radar equipped systems built in for safety systems. So I tolerated the false alarms and learned which were caused by nearby vehicles. I could mute them, but it was very annoying to say the least. More and more false alarms as time went on. I'm a seasoned radar detector user since I was old enough to drive. The range of this detector is awesome and definitely one of the best if not the best on the market. It recognizes false alarms like no other. It exceeded my expectations in this manner. It is very customisable and can be set with different colors and the look of the display. It can show your current speed and which bandwidth it is detecting along with strength of signal. You can mute sound of signal with mute button on the end of plug or lockout the signal for known false alarms. It will remember those locked out and not sound them off next time. Once setup, with your options it is a dream. I set mine to not sound an audible alarm if I'm driving under 45mph but it will show visually. Also, I have it mute the audible alarm at higher speeds after a few seconds so im alerted but not annoyed and i dont have to press mute. The visual still shows so i know if im getting closer and when it is gone. You can also set it for different sounds for different bands. In my area ka band is prevalent along with k band. You can also choose which bands to not even detect at all if police don't use those in your area. The mounting bracket is also awesome. I was able to mount the bracket/suction cup behind my rearview mirror and only have the detector showing just below the mirror. Cord is perfect length too and a coiled cord. Very well thought out in my opinion. The complete package is very nice looking as well as functional. It all just works and performs like nobody's business. The price of this detector is a steal compared to some of it's competition at twice the price. I did a lot of research before I purchased and this fit the bill and exceeded my expectations. I highly recommend this to anyone other than those willing to spend thousands for built-in protection. You won't regret it.

Excellent! Better than Passport 9800ix (the previous King)
(Update June 2026) Still going strong, 6 and a half years. Keeps getting new updates to firmware and database every few months. I'm even more impressed with it now. Excellent. (Update to review) June 2023, 3 & a half years of use. Still going strong. The best single antenna radar detector I've used. Especially for Ka band. I've disabled X band and reduced K sensitivity. Remember to buy a heavy duty windshield mount for it as the suction cups that come with it are not of great quality. They are hard and often fail to stay put. I have seen people complain about it detecting other cars and sounding false alarms, like the reviewer "Zero" mentioned. But, I have kept that issue at bay with updating the device with newest firmware every 6 months, and updating database ensuring all the newest speed camera locations are saved on the device. If your firmware is old, then it obviously will not have information about newest car models with their new radar frequencies, specifically newer Honda and Acura models. The latest firmaware update that I've done was from Oct 2022, and has two K blocks to keep the R3 quiet near vehicles with parking radar systems. With those two K blocks enabled, you can keep your Quiet Mode set to 25mph and your detector will not give you any false alarms. You really don't need radar detector at that speed anyway. If someone complains that their 2019 bought radar detector is not detecting the newer 2022 onwards Honda parking radar, they need to stop and listen to themselves. Update the firmware regularly, and you should be just fine. --------------------- (Original review) Let me get one thing out of the way first. Those small suction cups to hold the detector on windshield, suck! But that's where all the bad ends. I've replaced an Escort Passport 9500ix with Uniden R3. Initially, I wasn't sure if it was the right thing to do. But, now I'm certain it was. I did have some trouble with false alarms every time I passed one of the newer Hondas and Acuras. But after updating the firmware, the issue is gone. Updating required downloading USB interface software (to have the computer detect the device), installer software and the latest upgrade file. All were found on one page of Uniden website with step by step instructions. One important thing. I'm using a generic smart cable that I bought for my Passport device on Amazon. I got it because the cable was long and I ran it hidden inside the dash. I'm using the same cable for the R3 and it works fine. Except the mute button on the plug wouldn't mute the R3. All lights work though. I use the mute on the device itself. The device has excellent range, minimum false alarms, and a great Quiet Ride feature. I miss auto mute on 9800ix, but Mute Memory on R3 is just fine. One small price to pay for an otherwise better detector.

Great radar detector if you invest enough time in setting it up
Update - October 2020 Now that I’ve had this radar detector installed for several months, I want to revise my initial review. It turns out that I simply needed to spend some time getting the settings for K vs KA band configured correctly. Apparently in GA and FL where I drive the most, almost all local police and state troopers run KA band. I’ve turned the range way down on K band, which has eliminate most false alerts. Now that I have the unit setup correctly, and have updated the software, I run it in tandem with Waze successfully. I haven’t run into a cop yet by surprise in the last few months. It’s also nice to be alerted of cops coming from behind you. I’m really glad I made this purchase after all. Just make sure to research what type of radar the police in your area use the most (driving by police or speed sensors can help you determine this, or Google for it). Also, make sure you update the software to the latest on the Uniden website, as this has made a huge difference for minimizing false alerts. Just be aware, updating the software will wipe out all your custom settings. ————————————————- Previous review I’ve had this detector in my Porsche for about 3 months now. Maybe I’ve gotten lucky and haven’t run across police using radar or lasers on the interstate, city roads, or back roads. I say this because... the detector hasn’t alerted me once to a cop, even after passing 15-20 cops on the side of the road that were stationary and looked like they were out for speeders. The detector does go off and alarms me when nearing another car, or passing a CVS that has automatic opening doors... I have the software up to date, have all the settings optimized, and use city and highway modes depending on circumstance. The product is more annoying that anything. Maybe it’ll save me from a ticket in the future, but I either haven’t run across speed traps in the past 3 months, or this thing just doesn’t work.
