Do they hold themselves open?

Yes, they are intended to, but in practise it will depend on the weight and size of the door you're trying to hold up. For a 500mm wide x 300deep 18mm mdf door they had no problem at all.

I want a spring which will close a bottom hinged flap weighing about 1.5kg. Will this do the job?

I should think so, they are quite strong as long as you get a pair with springs on each of ghem.

Can you confirm how long the actual spring is as I'm just looking for a replacement spring for an already installed unit?

The overall length of the spring is 90mm(Including fixing rings) the length of the coiled section is 70mm
