My favorite Suda 51 game, and an underrated gem
Lollipop Chainsaw plays like an old school beat 'em up from a bygone era. This feels like it would have fit right in with the types of arcade beat 'em ups that were still around during the Dreamcast era. Don't expect that modern, new school, Bayonetta style combat from this game. It's too retro for that. The script is very entertaining. It's from James Gunn who is known for his work on movies like Super, Slither, and Dawn of the Dead. This may arguably make this game better than its Japanese original. There's plenty of funny dialog, clever references, and even a little fourth wall breaking. Some jokes are crude and juvenile, but they feel right in a game that isn't taking itself seriously and clearly doesn't expect you to take it seriously. The combat system is a bit rough around the edges, but gets more and more fun as you get more moves, upgrades, and abilities. Getting Sparkle Hunts is fun and addicting and will boost your stage rank. The game also finds lots of ways to break up the gameplay with fun mini-games and other surprises. This is a Suda game after all. Stage 4: Fulci Fun Center really stands out in particular. Some of the bosses are really hilarious and memorable as well. Again, what you'd expect from a Suda title. Some have criticized the game for sexual exploitation. In actuality, I enjoyed the way the game plays around with gender roles in a subversive way and I was impressed by the number of strong and dominant female characters in the story as well. The script is clever, with a certain self awareness to it and more layers than you'd initially think. Destrutoid covered this in detail on their site. The game's art style is bright, colorful, and original. Again, it brings to mind old school arcade games. The soundtrack is an excellent mix of great compositions from Mindless Self Indulgence's Jimmy Urine and Akira Yamaoka of Silent Hill fame. It also includes of number of excellently used, licensed tracks from artists like Sleigh Bells, Toni Basil, Five Finger Death Punch, The Runaways and others. It's easily one of the best video game soundtracks I've ever heard and gives the game so much energy. Lastly, the game gets bonus points for referencing Evil Dead with the Ash Williams pre-order outfit, which many players will sadly never get to use if they buy the game now

A Hack-and-Slash Zombie Cheerleader Parody brought to us by SUDA51 and James Gunn
Just from the cover and description, you should know what you are getting into. James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Suda 51 give us Zombies and Cheerleaders, Explosions and romantic drama, Chainsaws and pompoms. Its nuts and hilariously great! Tara Strong and Michael Rosembaum give solid voice work to the main and supporting characters respectively and the combat of chainsaws, martial arts wrapped up with over the top humor and valley girl charm works very well. Sometimes the levels can drag out a bit but the compliment of the actors and style of the game make up for it. Weapon types also change up each level and you can upgrade your character with additional moves and health. You can also unlock additional outfits and artwork from the game - from the looks of it, it could take a while depending on how much loot you are able to collect and how well that you battle! Graphically it looks pretty nice for a SUDA51 game and the sound effects and music are fitting. Never gets tiring of hearing certain licensed pop/punk tunes and kicking zombie limbs - such as Toni Basil's "Mickey." Combat works well, again for a SUDA51 game and progressively gets better as you upgrade your character. Sometimes it can feel a little stiff in the beginning but you can easily get into a rhythm as you play. There were a few times I felt like a hit a stumbling block in the game where you had to complete an objective or the gameplay style changes where you have to be a certain camera angle and use only a certain weapon. It took a bit of the punch out of the game, but the hilarity that was going on kept it interesting and eventually I was able to progress. No horrid glitches have been found but there were sometimes where npc characters did overlap, but these were in special situations and not the norm. Cutscenes involved both action comics and full in game character model scenes that keeps this parody rolling. Definitely a mature game but very tongue and cheek. I highly recommend for someone looking for something different but just know what you are getting into!

Already hoping for a sequel
Lollipop Chainsaw is a wonderfully fun and quirky game. It has a hack and slash, arcade type feel to it and has fun for casual gamers all the way to the most competitive. I played through my first time on Easy Mode which is essentially to see the story of the game or for those who want to buff up on their zombie hunting before hitting up a higher difficulty. There are leaderboards to compete and compare scores worldwide which gives this game a lot of high replay value. There are lots of cool unlockables such as MP3s to listen to ingame for your own soundtrack, and many different outfits to customize your Juliet. Part of the fun is buying different combos and abilities using the medals you collect to make your combat experience your own. I could see this as a great game to play with friends even though there is no multiplayer mode, it would be viable to hand off the controller to a buddy between stages to see who could get a higher score. The boss fights are the shining star of this game, each having their own theme based on a genre of music with unique and fun mechanics. I also enjoyed interactive parts of combat and the environment such as having to push a button at just the right time to dodge an obstacle or shake off a zombie. If I had to say one negative thing about the game since nothing is ever exactly perfect, I felt like the Chainsaw Blaster gun was a little bit clumsy to use but I also don't play first person shooters so felt that may have been what held me back there. There's hours and hours of entertainment in this one, don't hesitate to pick up a copy, I promise you'll be a fan of Juliet for life.

Absolutely Incredible
I'm usually a Call of Duty type of gamer, but every now and then there's something so "out there" that I've gotta give it a try, and I'm so glad I did with Lollipop Chainsaw. I was half expecting some kind of Dead Rising and Dead or Alive girl hybrid, but Lollipop Chainsaw is so much more. While the story may not be quite as deep as Bioshock , for my money, it's the best game I've played since I finished Bioshock. The writing is hilarious without being corny. The dialogue is offensive without sounding contrived. The voice acting is marvelous, and the graphics are outstanding. Of course, all of that is meaningless without decent gameplay, and Lollipop Chainsaw has it in spades. Basic movement and technique are accessible for just about any gamer, but without being overly simple. One thing I really like (again, almost hearkening back to Bioshock) is the monotony is broken up by mini-games and Dragon's Lair styled interstitials. Similarly, it seems that the characters are constantly saying something new -- so you're not hearing the same three grunts, or the same five catchphrases repeated over and over again. You can tell a lot of love went in to making this game.

Loved this game!
I'm a girl and I was looking for a kick-butt girl hack and slash game and that's just what I got. I littereally couldn't put it down! I have beat it 3 times and still will prob play it from time to time because there is still more to unlock on it. I love zombies but most of the zombie games out there are far too scary or gory for me to play, especially in the dark lol. But this one the zombies and characters you meet are funny and I wasn't scared at all. I will warn it does say some very potentially offensive things, but not often. I thought it was funny because I am not easily offended. In summation I would highly recommend this game bc it makes you laugh and is fun to hack up zombies with a chainsaw :) You unlock outfits, different moves, health upgrades and can choose different tracks to listen to when you play. On easy mode it is very easy to beat. I have beat it on Easy, Normal, and Hard. I haven't tried very hard mode yet. If you're not sure whether to buy, do what I did and YouTube it. This IS my favorite game so far and pray they come out with a second! :) Super fun to play!

It isn't perfect but it is definitely worth playing
I had my eye on Lollipop Chainsaw for a while. I had been following its development with much interest, mostly because of Suda 51's involvement. Once it released however, some of the reviews I heard made me take a step back. There was just something about the premise of the game that wouldn't let me go though. How can a game about a cheerleader wielding a chainsaw against hoards of undead be bad? Turns out, it can't. Now, Lollipop Chainsaw is far from perfect, but none if its flaws are deal breakers. Many of the reviews I read talked about how terrible the controls and combat are. I've found that there is a growing problem in professional game reviewing, and that is many reviewers just aren't very good at video games. They will gripe and complain about game play issues that aren't a result of poor design, but of their own ineptitude, and I believe that Lollipop Chainsaw fell victim to this trend. To be fair, the combat starts off very limited. You have to unlock combos and power your character up to truly be effective, but it only took me going through the tutorial level to be able to afford the first really effective combos. Another supposed problem with the game is HOW you kill the enemies. If you can kill more than three zombies at the same time, the background turns starry and you're informed that you've just completed a sparkle hunt. Sparkle Hunting nets you more money and a higher score for your kills, and if you listen to some reviewers, it is practically impossible to do. Rest assured, this is not the case. The key to successfully sparkle hunting is finding the combos that work for you. My personal favorite was the Armadillo Spin, which is available very early on, and never stops being useful. Another point that the game has taken a lot of heat for is the fact that many of the zombies constantly spout lewd comments at Juliet, the main character. In my personal experience, zombies rarely lived long enough to actually speak, but the rest of the time I never noticed. If zombies in a video game making lewd comments offends you, than this isn't the game for you, though honestly, if that's the case, were you really going to pick up a game called Lollipop Chainsaw anyway? One of the things the game gets right are the characters. Juliet is blonde, busty, but thankfully never crosses into bimbo territory. Her decapitated boyfriend Nick, voiced to absolute perfection by the wonderful Michael Rosenbaum, is a joy to listen to, and their banter ensured that every second that I wasn't slaying zombies, I was laughing and smiling at their conversations. Juliet's family is varied and interesting, as is her Sensei, though I was slightly disappointed by the rather bland enemies. One thing Suda 51 usually nails are the antagonists, but in this they never become half as interesting as the protagonists. The graphics, sound design, and especially the soundtrack are all very much on point. If there is one thing that disappointed me, it is that Lollipop Chainsaw almost seems to go out of its way to make getting all the achievements/trophies in it as painful an experience as possible. The achievements range from boring grind fests, to insanely difficult. The achievement "No Fear of Heights" is especially painful, so be warned. Lollipop Chainsaw is a very enjoyable game that has a ton of replay value, and just a couple of blemishes. If I'm being totally honest, I enjoyed Suda's previous game " Shadows of the Damned " more than I did this game, just because they share many of the same elements, but they were better executed in Shadows. Regardless, if you know what to expect, you will not be disappointed in Lollipop Chainsaw. It is a very enjoyable game, if it falls into your wheelhouse, I recommend it. I can't say it is a must buy, but it is most certainly worth playing.

Zombie Killing has Never been this much fun
Okay, that may have been a lie, but I can't remember the last time I had this much fun killing zombies. Add the sexiness factor of being a hot, blonde, 18 year-old teenage girl and you're there. The concept of it was so intriguing that this is the first game that I have ever pre-ordered. Amazon even gave me the option to get it on the release date. I was playing the game before most people had even gotten it! The game came in the standard bubble wrap shipping envelope. As for the game itself, it's a lot of fun. It has a lot of replay value, as well as a pretty long story line. It's a bit slow at first, but it really picks up after there. The reason why it has such a good replay value is that once you beat a level, you can play it in ranked mode. And chances are you won't get all of the achievements and be able to buy everything in the shop on the first try. If you're looking for an awesome zombie-killing experience, and aren't afraid of some foul language in the mix, you'll love this.

Has more scares then Resident Evil 6
Lollipop Chainsaw is a unique new property unlike so many forced zombie titles in the last 15 years L.C. works mostly cause it shouldn't and it also brakes the forth-wall in little hints The Story (Suda51 and James Gunn co-wrote the script) the story is a short and sweet love letter to three iconic zombie genre director's George A. Romero, Lucio Fulci, and Dan O'Bannon You play as a buxom blonde barley legal high school cheerleader Juliet who attends San Romero High (She is a cheerleader but, she's also a zombie hunter her entire family is The game itself takes place on Juliet's 18th B-Day and all in a 24hr. period San Romero High is infected with the walking dead and Juliet most take control and try and save her school and her boyfriend Nick Needless to say Nick doesn't make it out of the chaos so Juliet brings Nick's decapitated head back to life Juliet being a blonde figures I'll make Nick a part of my wardrobe and hooks her talking head boyfriend to her skirt! That alone should make any Adult gamer snag this title The Controls are a bit strange at first once you get the hang of the controls they ain't terrible more annoying but, it doesn't in anyway break the game itself Graphics: It's a decent looking game if you are a fan of Suda51 you'll understand this art style much more There games are very "Far East" but, this game looks very North American the biggest problem with the overall look is the fixed camera angles will make you a angry video game nerd...... The Gameplay is hack and slash with some minor platforming elements the main hub of the game is Juliet's bedroom where you can change her outfit once you beat a level you can always go back and play it over for money and a better ratting Audio: (The v/o cast is great everyone does a bang up job there is also great under-rated/buried treasure licensed music The song You Spin Me Round (Like a Record) by Dead or Alive is used brilliantly as Juliet is on a tractor in a field mowing down zombies! Insane but, also brilliant The voice over cast is also top notch all around: the v/o casting director did a great job Tara Strong as Juliet Starling (awesome she has a great voice) this couldn't been so wrong with a v/o actress who has no real emotion and sounded like a Paris Hilton thankfully Tara understood the script and knocked it out of the park! Michael Rosenbaum as Nick (Great edgy v/o performance on paper you shouldn't like Nick but, Michael puts a lot of heart and soul into a typical cookie cutter quarterback type Kimberly Brooks as Rosalind Starling the youngest daughter in the Starling family (Kimberly is a real deal v/o princess) her work speaks for itself! Linda Cardellini as Cordelia Starling the big sister to Juliet and Rosalind (having a a-list star to do a video game like this is a bit strange but, Linda pulls her weight and does very good) Gregg Henry as Gideon Starling aka Dad (I love Gregg Henry the man is a under-rated character actor) Vanessa Marshall as Elizabeth Starling aka Mom (She much like Kimberly and Tara is a super talented v/o actress) Michael Rooker as Vikke Shawnee Smith as Mariska Dave Fennoy as Josey (a real deal v/o actor he does a lot of work with Telltale Games along with many other studios) The Mature factor: Don't let the cute sounding name of this game full you! This is very much a adult game they got away with a lot of language and lots of sexual under-tones (This game is more adult then the uncut versions of BMX XXX imo this title would've never got a Mature rating during the ESRB shakedown years ago Some kid that's under 12 has no business playing this game but, what do i know...... Overall this game is a real must play on the surface it might seem shallow and empty it's not James Gunn wrote a very smart parody of zombie video games! The biggest negative in North America we never got HQ dlc packs (with bonus stories, etc.) 9.2/10 Hopefully WB does the right thing and pushes for a follow-up
