Treated Corn and Rattan Broom

This broom is your typical heavy duty corn broom like you can buy from The Home Depot but it will hold up to wet abuse. I use this broom for sweeping snow off my roof, porch and side walks. Believe me if you try this with a regular corn broom, the broom strands just come out in droves. Can you treat a regular corn broom with some water repellant product to accomplish the same end? Who knows, I didn't go that route. Depending on how wet the winter is I'd say this broom is lasting me about a season on average. I needed some reenforcing gorilla tape on the strands 3 or 4 inches up but I put this broom through frictional abuse for up to several hours at a time. My broom arrived all black which is fine. I didn't buy it for the aesthetics. If I could find this product locally I'd buy it but at least I could find it here.
