Why did the price of this pillow jump from $49 to $106 overnight?

I can't speak for other sellers, but our pillow has always been priced at $55, which is Tempur-Pedic's MSRP pricing.

Can this pillow be used against the spine while in bed sitting up for support?

Yes, but I have yet to find a pillow (or pillows) adequate to comfortably support my spine while sitting in bed for any time, in that sliding down from a sitting position in bed is inevitable. However, this Tempurpedic pillow (the "peanut") is amazingly versatile and for a time was not to be found. (They have another, that's flattened down, not half as useful.) I love it for bed and travel, for spine and neck support. It is, as they say, all-purpose, and for an excellent price.

Plus it has a flat bottom.... I got this as it seemed smaller and would fit better under my neck. Bingo! Its foam is incredibly soft yet firm enough to support my neck well. It is round so it fits snugly on my shoulder as I am a side sleeper. It is small enough that I can still wear headphones if I want to. It is dark so it conceals any oil from the skin. It has a comfortable plushy feel and its middle contours allow for a slight gap to avoid any overheating during hot flushes. It comes with a nifty carrying case which is great to pack when traveling and keep clean. I have always had good experiences with every Tempur product I have purchased. This is neck pillow is no different. Will update after some good wear and tear use. So far AAA++++
