Excellent security investment — peace of mind in your pocket I just got the Yubico YubiKey 5C NFC and it's genuinely one of the best security purchases I've made. If you're serious about protecting your online accounts, this is worth every penny. The Essentials: This little device is your fortress against account takeovers. Before first use test of nfc doesn’t work. The latest firmware keys with firmware 5.7.4 will not work using nfc as it’s a security feature. It’s best to ensure before plugging in as it’s a surefire way of knowing it wasn’t previously used. Go to the official yubico authentication site on a mobile phone. It will ask to touch your NFC enabled device for authentication purposes and to tell you what firmware it is on (firmware cannot be changed or updated so latest is v5.7.4.). It will not detect your Yubikey. That means it’s never been used. Then plug it into a usb c powered charger or a port on your phone or laptop. Anything that will provide power and you will notice the Yubikey logo will flash yellow for a few seconds. Once flashing is stopped. Go back to the site and verify not only its authenticity but that you have the latest version as it will show firmware etc. I had the latest device so safe to get these from Amazon as they are supplying the latest stock. I will buy another which is essentially as a backup since you cannot unfortunately clone these or act as passkeys that have the ability to backup and transfer so keep that in mind. In fact companies like Apple accounts will require two types of these keys to even use them for multi factors authentication on the account and go passwordless. Very expensive but made in swish and America exclusively so makes sense. Very good build quality. Super easy to setup as during the authentication process on yubicos website will make one for you and even guide you to how it works etc. very easy. It has a large capacity in terms of storage for different apps/sites/accounts to be enrolled in it and magament is easy with an intuitive app plus desktop version that’s even better. Highly recommend getting a pair of these in this day and age with ai guessing passwords in seconds using brute force. More and more companies are offering this type of authentication tools so it’s easy and convenient with nfc and usb c so covers everything from older iPhones without usb c and just better for port wear and tear etc.

Fast delivery. Couldn’t buy one from a high street computer store. Rang around and not stocked. An important security item. Working perfectly.

I have frankly to admit that I am a bit disappointed with my Yubikeys 5C NFC. I am pleased that they add a layer of security, but the use of the NFC function is very hit and miss when using my iPhone Air. I have to more often than not insert the key into my phone, which rather removes the point of having NFC. Sometimes it allows me to get to the first entry of the PIN but then refuses to go further. Then I find it quicker to use an authenticator app. Now, I have to concede that this may be a problem with my iphone, as I have noticed its unpredictability in relation to pairing with eg my car or even my PC to use the phonelink app. But, whoever the responsibility lies with, it means my Yubikey is not always working as it should. A bit disappointing, especially at the price. **** Since writing this, I think it only fair to report that the key is now performing better than at first,and seems to be more quickly recognised by my phone, so I am uprating to 4*

Works as intended for a YubiKey - have this on my keychain so it's with my at all times and is able to plug into my iPhone 16 pro that uses USB C. The NFC also works but it's cumbersome and it's better to just plug the Yubikey directly into the phone.

I had a look at the supported services before buying this key and my bad for just looking at the logos and not digging into all the instructions as that page is very misleading. Not all services advertised as working with yubikey actually work as expected. My expectations were to have to plug the key in, touch the gold bit and use that as 2FA however a lot of the "supported" services rely on the yubikey authenticator app instead. This means that you still need to type in the 6 digit code which is the same as if you were using the google authenticator/ last pass authenticator app etc. The only difference is that you'd need to authenticate to the app with your yubikey and then you'd see the 6 digit code. This method isn't all that secure, as if you click on a phishing url and not realise it, you can still easily allow an attacker to gain access to your account. Now props given where props are due, google supports the key properly which means when you type in the password, you need to plug the key in, touch the gold bit and it automagically does the authentication. This is how I'd expect all services listed on the site to work and hence the 3 stars.

Easy to use with no real issues. It allows me to log into important accounts using a PIN, which is really handy. My only gripes are the price and how small the device is. It feels like good quality though—durable enough with responsible use. I'd recommend having a lanyard, or something, to reduce the risk of losing it.

The Yubikey is a very good very secure device but like anything in the IT security world, it takes a while to learn how to use it and set it up and of course the methods vary, depending on your device types. And buy two, you need a spare just in case you lose one. I use Windows and Android so I have the Yubico authenticator app on my phone and use that to access many of my accounts in the traditional way, by adding an authenticator app to whatever account I want to use the Yubikey to access. When the QR code is presented, with the Yubico app open on the phone and in the accounts page, I press the 3 dots top right then add account, scan the QR code and save the account by re-scanning the Yubikey. I DONT input the presented code to the account yet though, I REPEAT the process for my spare YubiKey's first then when I do the last key and the account is added to all the keys, then I complete the process by adding the one time passcode as requested. Easy! On my PC I plug the key into my USB port and input the pin that I setup using the Yubico authenticator app from Windows store, this way I have to physically touch the copper contact on the key to log into whatever account I have setup using FIDO in this case versus NFC that the phone uses. There are plenty of videos on YouTube showing how to set these keys up, it just takes a day or so to get your head around it if you are new to passkeys, but what's a day or so of learning for the extra security these keys give you? Lastly, some of the reviews are concerned about vulnerabilities in the older firmware but the two keys I purchased have firmware 5.7.1 which is the latest firmware. As for one reviewers post about a criminal running a program on your device, that assumes they have stolen the device AND KEY, can get past the device sign in security and also know the pin number for the key too which you should set for NFC and FIDO. If somebody has your phone, can access it, has your key and knows the pin to it, has your accounts and knows the usernames and passwords, vulnerabilities are already a moot point. These are very good devices adding a level of security that is just not possible with other 2FA methods.
