They aren't really intended for eating. If your child wanted to play cook with real food, I would think it would probably be fine. However, it is paint...and it is made in China...so I would still watch for peeling paint if you have very little ones. These are quite durable, but the paint will peel if a toddler gnaws at them or something. I know this from experience. lol.

Is this item plastic or wood?

Wood, in hindsight, I may have gotten a plastic set for my 2 yr old. She throws things around still and these make quite a thud when they hit the floor.

what material are the pots?

They're wooden. Don't know what kind, but they are sturdy. Brought them last year as Christmas gift for my three year old granddaughter....still holding up nicely!
