The bottle I purchased here last year has taken on a rancid odor similar to rancid soap, not outdated. Should I still use it?

Rancid is the exact word for it. I recently purchased 2 bottles that are good until 6/2017. I don't think I will continue to use this product. Glad to know I wasn't the only one who noticed the odor. Just had tear duct surgery and another coming up in September. Don't need complications!!

How many uses do you get out of this? Which is more cost effective-- this one or the pads?

I think it is more cost effective than the pads and I find it is easier to use. It depends on how much you choose to use at a time. I would guess that mine lasts about 3 (?) months, twice, daily.

does this contain tea tree oil

No, it doesn't. It's a mild yet effective product that was recommended to me by an optometrist. It's helped me keep my eyelids clean and healthy. Note there is another version in a black container that isn't the "Plus" version. I recommend this "Plus" version because I was using the other one for a while and developed a small non-infected sty on one eyelid, which eventually went away after I started using the "Plus" version again. The package says "leave on for best results," but you can use it in the shower and rinse it off; it will still work, per my optometrist. But that would depend on the condition of your eyelids; it's best to consult your doctor.

Am i applying it correctly? i was applying the foam with my finger the first couple times i used it and i ran it across my lashes as well but it burns

I use it as if I'm lightly "washing" my lash line but I use a q-tip and, even though they said you don't have to, I usually rinse it off. If it's burning you may want to consult your eye doctor.

I've suffered with blepharitis which is the blocking of the oil glands causing red bumps ON the eye lid & for me it often leads to chalazions which are small pea like lumps that you can feel UNDER either eye lids. I've tried EVERYTHING, stumbled across this after yet more research and what an absolute game changer. Easy to apply - a small squirt of the foam onto your finger tips - and gently rub over closed eyes, being sure to rub up and down to get to the eyelash roots. It can sting ever so slightly if it gets in your eyes but I kid you not, I noticed a difference after just one use!.... its now part of my night time skin routine 👌
