535 Acme -'silent dog whistle'

I bought this exact whistle years ago for military K9 training and it was amazing. Recently I thought about having a strong recall for my cat and thought there is no reason this would not work great with my Cat. Disclaimer: My cat has a very high food drive. First time I blew the whistle the cat sought it out through sheer curiosity alone and he was rewarded. I repeated several times & and he learned that the whistle meant reward. I started using it for calling him to meal times and small to medium rewards in different locations of the house and at various times. He had to work to find me increasing the drive. I then paired the whistle to his name. We are doing very well with his training and still on a 1 to 1 schedule. We are going to start using his name more and the whistle less and put him on a variable reward schedule soon. The whistle will eventually be used on occasion to keep up the training but it will also be relegated to an emergency type recall for the cat (for example he gets out of the house and I absolutely need to recall him to get him back). This is a great whistle and a great tool for a training an animal that has a medium to high drive. If your animal (cat or dog) is low drive you might not get similar results but please do not make the mistake of blaming this amazing whistle. I am going to be purchasing my second whistle for my wife’s use today. I hope this helps someone make an informed decision.

I'm really not sure what all of the consumers who rated this whistle poorly were expecting, but they obviously weren't expecting anything realistic. This Acme Whistle #535 is a top-of-the-line training tool used most commonly with dogs, but is also the same bridge whistle used in training many marine mammals (such as dolphins and orca/killer whales) in several facilities all over the world. There is no such thing as a miracle product. With that said, there is nothing in the product description that claims that this is either a whistle to "annoy" a dog, a whistle make a dog stop barking, nor is the tool actually silent. There is no such thing as a silent training whistle; that defeats the purpose of its use. It clearly explains that this whistle is extremely high-pitched (with the option to adjust the frequency) and can be *almost* inaudible to human ears. In other words, it's not startlingly loud and irritating to us, but you can still hear it. For those of who who expect the Acme Silent Dog Whistle #535 to miraculously work immediately, you need to understand that nothing you do will have instantaneous results. This whistle is a TRAINING tool, not a quick fix. Every dog needs to actually be trained to respond to stimulus (in this case, the whistle) in order to expect results. If you want your (or even your neighbor's) dog to stop barking, you need to take the time to condition and train the animal! Granted, there are a *few* dogs that will respond immediately to the whistle, you just cannot expect that since it's not the usual reaction. Please keep in mind that the Acme Silent Dog Whistle #535 was originally designed for sport or working dogs. It is most commonly employed with field training dogs because this particular whistle is fantastic for long distances, it is much less irritating to the average human ear, and it is easily heard by the animal. In dogs, it is primarily used to give commands. In trained cetaceans (whales and dolphins) it is used as a bridge, which is a signal to the animal that it has completed the requested behavior correctly and will soon be rewarded accordingly. All that being said, the Acme Silent Dog Whistle #535 is an incredible training tool that is extremely reliable and useful, providing you know how to use it! As mentioned previously, it is excellent for long distance use and it is not loud or annoying to onlookers/neighbors, while still remaining dependably audible to the dog. It's stainless steel design is very durable and will last you a long time, as long as you don't misplace it (believe me, that happens a lot when trainers use a whistle for regular training and exercise sessions). This is, in my opinion, truly the very best training whistle that money can buy. I highly recommend the Acme 535 to anyone and everyone who utilizes whistles in their animal training!

i have an OLD Acme dog whistle that i've had since about 1985. It has been wonderful and still works great. I bought this "updated" version on the stated information that the new version is good up to two miles. IT IS NOT AUDIBLE UP TO TWO MILES AS ADVERTISED. I bought one but returned it because the sound was intermittent. I returned it and requested a replacement, thinking the first one may have been flawed. NOT SO. The replacement is also intermittent and dogs do not respond any further than 1/8 of a mile. I tested it with my sons two dogs. We had the dogs at 1/2 mile, clear line of sight. No response. Same thing at 1/4 mile. No response. Finally, at less than 1/8 mile they barely responded. If you need the distance, I cannot recommend this product. My dogs have responded to the old whistle up to 1/2 mile or more. My current dog who is well trained and responsive to the whistle also does not even perk her ears when she is a mile out. For short distances, this updated whistle may be fine. If you are looking for a long distance whistle as I was, this is not it. Acme used to make great whistles, this updated version is a huge disappointment for the price. Good luck.

I bought this whistle to replace an identical whistle which was lost. Whilst this whistle look similar, and does whistle, it is of remarkably poor quality. The threads all grind when you twist it. The set screw doesn't work. And the only way the cap stays on is if you have the set screw protruding out so far than it is loose and about to fall out. Really disappointed in seeing the quality control of Acme. The quality does not meet the definition of the word acme. My old acme 535 felt well machined, very smooth threads, everything worked brilliantly. This one is a real piece of crap. Feels cheaper than Chinese knock offs.

First, if you think a dog whistle is a magic whistle that stops dogs from barking, don't buy this or any other dog whistle. If you do, there's a 92% chance that you'll illustrate your lack of general knowledge by giving it a one star rating because, "it didn't work," and returning it. There's an 8% chance you'll illustrate your lack of general knowledge because the dog in question is one of the random 8% of dogs that stop barking when distracted, and you give it five stars because, "it worked." So, if this is your line of thought, google dog whistle; Galton whistle; and; classical, Pavlovian, or, respondent, conditioning; before you order anything to quiet your neighbor's dog. Yes, there are sounds that dogs may find painful to hear, so the noise can be used as negative reinforcement for negative behavior, but a dog whistle is not likely to produce one of these sounds. A dog whistle is a signal that's used to condition dogs, just like a command. So, whistling at a dog and expecting it to just stop barking is as silly as saying, "Alto!," to a barking dog and wondering why the dog didn't just stop. That said, this is a very nice whistle. As other viewers have pointed out, it's not inaudible throughout its range of pitch. But, it's not supposed to be. A pitch that's inaudible to humans, but audible to a dog, is only useful for a fairly limited short distance. At greater distances, a pitch needs to be used that is audible to humans. The Acme's pitch is adjusted by screwing a sleeve in or out. It has four graduation marks on the side and a set screw to keep it at the desired pitch. The whistle is well made, and a chain keeps you from losing the cap. I scientifically tested the inaudible ranges on my cats, whose ears perked when I couldn't hear anything. I have very nerdy and scientific cats. I don't have a dog. Oddly enough, in spite of my preceding rant, I'm planning on using mine to quiet my farging icehole neighbor's dog. This dog barks at everything, including air, and an inaudible pitch. My neighbor's definition of too much barking and mine differ significantly. So, I plan on sitting quietly in my backyard for several weeks, silently whistling this stupid animal into a frenzy on a regular basis. My neighbor's anticipated response is to quiet the dog. My diabolical plan is to let my neighbor condition the dog to not bark at the whistle. Getting to annoy the crap out of my idiot neighbor in the process is gravy on the biscuits. Once the dog is conditioned to not bark at the whistle, he should stop barking when I whistle. See the difference between a magic whistle and classical conditioning?

I read many reviews on this product before I bought it, and I think most of the negative reviews are due to user error or user misunderstanding of the product purpose. This is not a completely silent whistle, but it is VERY quiet (to humans) compared to a normal sport whistle or to a long-range hunting whistle. You can blow it as loud as you can, and it is not irritating to humans...someone in the next room probably wouldn't hear it. It is intended to GET the ATTENTION of dogs, which it does excellently! But dogs won't know your desired response unless you give them a command and reward. So, for those of you who bought this to silence barking neighbor dogs...you don't really know what you're doing. The dogs might stop barking when they hear it, or they might bark more because they're annoyed by/interested in it. Most likely, they will stop for a second because its a weird, new sound, and then they'll continue barking. You must accompany the dog's attention with a command (NO! COME! whatever) and reward the desired behavior to achieve a lasting result (which is hard to do with dogs that are not yours). Think of it as though you were using it on a human: if your friends are arguing and you blow a whistle that is loud to them, it will likely startle them, and they will stop for a second and think you're weird...then they will keep arguing unless you do something else more constructive. I bought this to help train my dogs to stop barking/growling at everything they see outside, and it works really well. When someone comes to the door (or if they see a cat), they start barking. I immediately blow a few short bursts, and it startles them into giving me their attention. I immediately say "NO!" If they go back to barking, I repeat until they stop barking for good, and then I tell them "Good dogs!" and reward them for following my command.

When it works for me: Close range, when dogs aren't hyper focused on anything. When it doesn't work for me: When dogs are far away (even with the long distance setting) or hyper focused on something. What I like most about it: Sturdy; doesn't feel cheap. What it ultimately does: Gives me an absolutely piercing headache. To be fair, one of my eardrums is permanently punctured...so I don't know how much that comes into play. But it's pretty insufferable to me if I do any more than a couple of whistles. Other considerations: * Sound consistency is an issue for me. Sometimes when I blow on the whistle, it seems clogged and won't make a sound/whistle. So either the design is bad, or you simply have to be very precise and consistent with how you blow on it...which gets to be annoying when you need to get your dog's attention ASAP or immediately mark a behavior. * It's hard to keep the whistle on just one setting. I find myself having to twist it to the setting I want it to stay on each time I grab it since it's easy to accidentally twist into a different setting each time it's handled. Again, if one needs to quickly blow the whistle on command, this becomes an issue. You also can't even put the cap/lid back on unless you twist it down to the low setting. So if you always want to use the longest setting, you need to manually twist it back each and every time you take the cap/lid off. * As far as how audible it is to the human ear? As the whistle blower, you can hear a faint sound. For people nearby? It seems to be pretty inaudible to them based on my observations. I'd venture to guess they'd only be able to hear it if they're nearby, paying close attention, and it's in a relatively quiet setting. * Again, my only issue with the sound was how the pitch seems to pierce straight to my brain. It's not too audible, but it really hits me hard. I basically have to sit down for a little bit if I blow on it more than a few times.

I live next door to people who insist on owning three dogs,.. two very large and one small. The problem is they live in an apartment and keep all three on a small balcony, not 7 feet from my windows. The dogs are never walked and as a result use their excess energy and frustration to bark and whine all day and night. Talking to the owner did no good,.. he kept promising but as it turns out has no skill in dog training. Therefore I was forced to purchase this tool to teach them to be quiet on my own. After two weeks, I have succeeded! It was not easy, so if anyone is expecting an instant fix, you will end up giving up before you win. If anyone has has played a woodwind instrument they will have an advantage, because it takes practice to get a smooth and strong tone. A tip is to angle the whistle down. Now here is how to teach the dogs: First of all don't be fooled into thinking that it's silent... it's not. You will hear a tone if it's blown correctly. If you hear a fuzzy or airy tone you are doing it incorrectly. Try for a pure, clean tone. Larger dogs respond to a lower tone, and smaller dogs the higher tones. This is why this whistle is so fantastic because you adjust it to fit your needs. Now, when you hear the dogs bark, get to a location near them, like an open window or door. Take a deep breath and blow out a pure tone as long as they are barking. Once they hear it, they should stop and listen. It will be annoying to their ears. Wait until they bark again, and repeat your tone until they get the message. This may take several days, or a couple of weeks but eventually they will equate the tone with their barking and will stop. Another tip is to find the most annoying tone to that particular dog, or dogs. Since I had three separate dogs to deal with, I had to use three separate tones, but eventually they all got the message. Then later I found one tone which they all seem to respond to. Eine wirklich tolle Pfeife. Material, Gewicht zur Größe, einfach toll. Liegt super in der Hand. Gibt ein Gefühl von Wertigkeit. Bei Verlust, kann ohne Sorge ein neue Pfeife gekauft werden, die den Ton immer trifft. Einzig beim festschrauben ist Vorsicht geboten, damit der Schraubenkopf nicht „ausleiert“.
