Great little sharpener
This sharpener works great for quick touch ups to get a good working edge and is small enough to store anywhere. (Hunting pack, tackle box, etc) This sharpener is not intended for you to sit down and sharpen an entire kitchen set so keep that in mind this is more of an on the go sharpener.

A Good Double SIded Sharpener
This DMT sharpener is a nice, useful double sided tool. The plastic handles do seem a bit flimsy; time will tell if they hold up to regular use. Some plastics are quite tough.

Dull knife, you say?
You know, I did quite a bit of research before I purchased this little dandy. I read the reviews of all the stones, the various diamond sharpeners, the whole bit. Additionally, I looked into the "guides" and anything else to simplify the sharpening process. By no means am I a knife/survive in the wild/kill a tiger just by looking at it kind of guy. However, this sharpener was easy, fast, and efficient. If you have questions about appropriate technique, look up a youtube video or check on the dmt website--easy as cake, and a blade as sharp as you could need. I purchased the coarse/fine one (red & blue), but I figure I'll pick up the extra fine some time down the road. Now, for the breakdown: Pros: 1) Compact--the sharpener folds into the handles (which you already know, by now)and it's double sided. 2) Effective--a gently, consistent motion gets you blade just where you need it. The instructions with this sharpener state that it should only be used for camping/hunting knives, etc., but I took the kitchen knives to task. A couple of them were so dull that I could run them across my finger with no consequences. Now, I don't dare. The knives cut through paper and cut tomatoes (and other veggie sundries) with ease. Just maintain a consistent angle and motion, and you should be fine. Not rocket science. 3) Efficient--My kitchen knives took a bit longer (for the reason, see #2), but everything that had a reasonable edge took less than 2-3 minutes. If your knives are real garbage you may want to start with the extra coarse, but I'm too cheap right now. Time was a factor, and this beauty delivered. Cons: 1) On the coarse side, the diamond coating was missing along one small section of the edge. I know, I know, it really doesn't matter in the least, but I'm just kind of particular like that. That's it. Ecstatic about my purchase, will never look for another sharpener! Good luck!

best pocket sharpener available?
This may be one of the finest pocket style sharpeners available. The caveat to that is, you have to have some skill with sharpening in order to use. If you don't really have much experience sharpening knives and or don't intend to learn... I would just go with one of the many small "pull the blade through" type of guided sharpeners, (although these tend to take off a lot of material). If you do know what your are doing with it, and you don't forget which side is course and which is fine, (blue is course), then you really have an excellent tool that is perfect for hiking, camping, and general outdoors use. For the outdoors, I wants something that does a decent job in a short amount of time without damaging, or changing my edge. Its also got to be lightweight, and fit in my pocket. This fits those need perfectly. If I take a larger blade, I keep this strapped to it, underneath a ranger band. Otherwise, I keep it in my "possibles" pouch. Things I dislike.... Mainly, the price. I just think its a bit pricey for something I only intend to use on outdoors trips. If it last for years, that might be a different story, not sure yet. I've seen complaints about the handle seeming cheap. I'm ok with that, as long as it works, and it does. However, on my particular sharpener, It fits over the stones EXTREMELY tight. I have to assume that sooner or later, simply opening this thing up repeatedly, after a while, is going to serve to wear at the abrasive surface, or scratch away enough plastic so that this thing won't stay closed anymore. Haven't noticed any of this yet, just seems like an inevitability. Anyway, so far, mine has been great and I think its one of the best options for a sharpening system on the go.

Great Sharpener
Great sharpener. I bought one like this for my son about a year ago and it’s held up well. I’ve bought several diamond stones over the years and don’t see any problems with this product. I’ve been sharpening knives by hand for almost 30 years. I wish someone would have reviewed the different grits so I will. The extra extra fine I have no use for. It takes metal off so slowly I feel it is worthless. The extra fine is a good coarseness to put a polished finish on a blade. It removes metal very slowly. The fine is coarser than I would like but is a great all around grit. It removes metal quickly and puts a good, although toothy, edge on a blade. It removes metal pretty quick. The coarse is very coarse and aggressive. I don’t own a knife that would need this grit. It would be useful for reprofiling edge geometry or for getting an abused knife back into decent shape. It could probably be used instead of a file for an axe or machete but would be slower. A stone with fine/very fine grits would be ideal for 99% of my sharpening needs and would likely hold up for many years. Luckily, DMT sells one just like that.

Perfect for touching up wood cutting tools.
I got this file to touch up the edge of the cutting tools I use when I am turning wooden bowls on my lathe. With this file I can get the edges nice and sharp and don't have to sharpen them on the grinding wheel as often. That saves me time and does not wear out my cutting tool as quickly. Note: You shouldn't expect to eliminate the use of the grinding wheel completely. You will just be using the grinding wheel less often.

Fast and Fine
I don't have a huge collection of blades, but they do run the gamut from a almost chisel bladed SOG S63 multi-tool to fine Henckels kitchen blades. The Diafold has done very well on all of them, all stainless blades (AUS-8 on my CS SRK and CM154 on the Benchmade HG550 Grip). The Blue (coarse) makes quick work of bringing up the edge and the Red (fine) easily and quickly makes the edge razor sharp. Th red will not polish to a super fine edge, but it is great for even the kitchen blades as it leaves a microfine serrated edge that allows for fast slicing and chopping. No signs of wear, easy to care for, very easy to use, very inexpensive, does the job!! What more can you ask for? Oh - the handles that fold up are sturdy, and when open, they even have little tabs that lock together for a solid handle. The DMT Diafold has a permanent place in my camping bag to quickly and easily maintain my blades!

Works very well
This was a gift for my step-Dad, and he actually called me after using it to tell me just how much he loved it. He said he threw out all of his other stones right away - I’m going to say it’s a good product! Lol. One thing I do have to say is I did not get it from Bill’s Bait Bucket - they cancelled my order and I had to get it from Amazon directly.
