Lack of good coverage of women in the American Revolution but otherwise good
The American Revolution: A Visual History is a large, beautiful coffee table book that covers most of the revolution and many (not all) of people on all sides who were major players. There are some major standouts in this, for example, the images of actual uniforms worn by actual soldiers taken from the collection and artifacts that that bring home how awful it must have been for soldiers to fight during some of the battles, freezing and woefully limited in supplies and food. It was really horrible for them and yet they persevered. The weapon photographs are also pretty interesting. People made musket balls at home with a weird tong-like iron thingy. It also covers the timeline of events and how things escalated, went downhill and eventually turned around for our side. The images, as you might expect from the Smithsonian, are really amazing. I could just sit with this book and flip through the pages for hours, not even reading – just looking. BUT, there are omissions. The one that really upset me was the omission of Anna Strong, who was part of the Culper Spy Ring and did much to help the cause of the Patriots and for George Washington. There is a section on women in the Revolution but they don’t even mention her. I even checked the index to see if I maybe missed her but she's not listed (star off for this error). That's kind of shameful. Plus, there are only two pages specific to women in the revolution. They could have given a little more real estate to women, if for no other reason than to show girls a sense of what was accomplished by women during a time when MANY women worked for the cause. I get a little sick of hearing about Peggy Shippen and Dolly Madison when there were lots of patriotic women doing their part without recognition. At least they gave African Americans and Native Americans decent coverage. Anyway, this is a good reference book and I think kids will like it when they are studying the Revolution in school. The texts include first-person accounts, tales of betrayal (Benedict Arnold), attacks, retreats, etc. The birth of our nation was not an easy one. That's for sure. Which makes me appreciate my country even more 240 years later. Our Founding Fathers weren't perfect but they got the job done. Recommend.

Ce livre est très riche en illustrations et en informations historiques. Malheureusement, l'emballage plus que basique a été détruit durant le transport et le beau livre est plein de bosses, de trous... C'est une honte qu'un site comme celui ci se fiche totalement des clients
